For whatever reason it took me 27 years to purchace my very first Rolling Stones album. I guess the main reason is that when listeing to the classic rock station growing up, they played so much Rolling Stones that it made me sick. But they played the same 10-15 song rotation on that radio station, and I realized I wasn't giving their entire catalog a fair shake. Afterall, they are the Rolling Stones, a legandy band, so they must be doing something right.
So I got "Exile on Main Street" over the weekend. I've listened to it now only 2 times, but I really really like what I hear. They really give a nod to the origins of rock n' roll on this album. I'll have to listen to this album a few more times to fully digest the material, but from first immpression I'm really happy I made this purchace.
So all you RS fans out there, what are the must haves and why? What should be my obsolute next purchace? Lets talk about the Rolling Stones in here, huh?

I'm a huge fan of Sticky Fingers.
You've got the rockers like Brown Sugar, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, and Bitch...all among their absolute best.
You've got amazing slower, more introspective work like Wild Horses and Sister Morphine.
There's a foray into country with the wonderful Dead Flowers, then a Nawlins' style stomp with I Got The Blues, and I haven't even mentioned You Gotta Move yet!
Sticky Fingers rules and needs to be choice #2. Beggars' Banquet should be your 3rd.

I need to get something by these guys, so I might get a couple of albums tomorrow. I think I'm going to get Exile.. and Sticky Fingers. They're at sale over here in order to promote the new album.

Let It Bleed is also just amazing.
Gimme Shelter, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Country Honk (country remake of Honky Tonk Women), Midnight Rambler, and Monkey Man are better alone than any album they did post 1975.

Excellent first Stones CD purchase. Speaking in general terms, I'd say that this album sprawls across more genres than some of the band's others. There's definitely a country vibe to it, but it also has the trademark blues sound the Stones are known for. All I can tell you is that you'll learn to love it even more as you keep listening to it.

It's right in the group of the best ones. Most, if not all, fans will concede that from Aftermath (1966) through Exile on Main St (1972) is the height of their greatness. You really can't go wrong with anything from that period as all of it is absolutely stunning, among the best rock music ever recorded.
I personally think it's a bit long and hard to digest in one sitting, but that doesn't take away from it's greatness. I like the immediacy of a 10-12 song album better in most cases.

What from their early years is a must have?
12x5 is my pick here.
You get the classic "It's All Over Now" cover, "Time Is On My Side", "2120 South Michigan Ave", "Around and Around" (Chuck Berry cover).
Since you're buying up Stones records, do yourself a favor and get the remastered SACDs that were released in 2002. They're in digipacks and look way, way sexy in addition to their amazing sound. Please, please do this. They sound 100 times better than the jewel case old master versions.

exile is what i consider to be the 'happiest' album ever recorded... the stones sure were feeling good at this time... there's of course the song 'happy' itself but the whole album has this vibe to it... you can hear that they are simply happy to play music, happy to have all those friends in the studio recording,etc... it's something really special which i don't hear on the other stone albums ... i love it
...and get 'let it bleed' next, which should have been credited to 'the magnificent keith richards with his backing band''

Waxy,
After I got tired of the Stones "hits", Exile became my favorite Stones CD. EoDM admittedly stole most of their riffs from the Stones. If that's true, most of that material was from Exile on Main Street.
To follow Exile I recommend Get Yer Ya Yas Out. Seriously good live album.
The Brian Jones era is well worth investigating. Many genius singles, a few consistently brilliant albums of original material, stacks of superb rock and roll covers. Try Between The Buttons for the originals, the debut for the covers, and the London Years Singles Collection 3cd set for the singles. Fantastic!
