I love Neil Young
For many reasons, he actually bumped Radiohead in the last few months for me. Neil Young writes gorgeous lyrics and there is a certain honesty there can be rarely found in other bands or other artists. Dylan had it, so do a few others, but not very many. I simply adore his lyrics, the way he sings about Americana, his style makes me wanna be out on the frontier. Mountains, hills, rivers, canyons, etc. Really beautiful stuff, its so eloquent and the lyrics imitate the natural beauty he describes; he combines it with this personal sense of longing but so well spoken that lots of other people can relate to. The ballads are equally gorgeous, look at anything off Harvest or After the Gold Rush, just really sadly beautiful, the way he writes about love. His political stances never seem ridiculous or radical or out of line. And he practices what he preaches, he never really "sold out" either. He does his own thing, he's been around for nearly 4 decades and has very rarely indulged in stupid trends.
Musically, his stuff is great too, its so diverse. He's obviously an awesome guitar player but some of his acoustic stuff has a certain grace goes nicely with the music.
Sorry, I know this was short and written kind of like a lame high school essay, but I'm bored and South Park is on.
So I hereby christen this the Favorite Artist thread.

Pearl Jam.
There are too many reasons for me to name, but everyone here knows enough about this band already so it isn't necessary for me to drone on.

David Bowie
I discovered him when he was the thin white duke. There was a picture of him in the newspaper for a concert review... He looked so grandiose I got curious and lucky for me an older cousin had some records. The first song I listened to was space oddity... and completely got hooked on the stardust album, I never gave it back to my cousin. I fell in love with the music and his persona... before that I was only listening to music for kids, he took me in a new world of sounds and I never looked back.
he's an artistic genius and his music an inspiration in my life.

My favorite usually bounces between Neil Young (for all the reasons you said) and Pearl Jam ( i don't think i need to explain why on this board)
I admire neil for every reason you said but i would add that he continues close to 40 years into his profesional career to make quality music. I admit their was a stretch in the 80's i did not care for but there are a lot of reasons for that. Other then that I have mostly enjoyed all his music from the 60's, 70's, some of the 80's, 90's and 00's. He also listens to his own muse. Trends don't matter to him and that is obviously what keeps him going.
I don't think neil is technically brillant on guitar but man he can get lost in a jam and just take you away. He mastered the one note solo.
His lyrics as you mentioned take you to another place and make you feel like you are in his story.
I can go on and on about neil all day but i should probalby stop.

Good calls with neil young, pearl jam, and david bowie. all absolutely brilliant. I have to go with mark lanegan though, that voice is something else and everything he has touched has turned to gold: solo, screaming trees, qotsa, mad season, twilight singers, gutter twins, etc. big props go out to johnny cash and tom waits as well

After Pearl Jam, it varies between The Beatles and Alice in Chains. The Beatles are just so diverse. In My Life is my second favorite song of all time. I dig the poppy early stuff. I love the later, experimental stuff too. The Beatles rock, plain and simple.
As for Alice in Chains, their entire catalogue continually speaks to me. Whether it be the harder, heavier Dirt, the catchy and beautiful Sap, or the masterpiece that is Jar of Flies, I tend to always have an AIC CD on high rotation in my CD player.

That's exactly how I feel about PJ.

My favorite album ever is Self Portrait. That should tell you something.
That you don't mind the odd spin of Dylan?
