I don't go to the theater anymore. I have decided to do all of my movie viewing on DVD at home. There are several reasons I did this. First: the price. Why pay $18.00 for my Wife & I to see a movie when we can own it for $16 in most cases. Second is the behavior & content of the crowd. The last two times I tried going to the theater (Fellowship Of The Ring and Alien Ressurection before that) were very bad situations. In Alien there was a 3-6 month old crying baby & it took the 17 year old usher 20 min. to make the parent leave. At LOTR the picture and sound were so poor they restarted the film 1/2 hour in, and it still sucked. This is a growing propblem for people like me that just want to go enjoy a movie & leave without incident. So concidering the price, the people & those goddamn commercials I decided to invest in a decent TV & DVD changer to enjoy the movies at home.

Anyone else boycotting the theater?

We don't go to the movies very often anymore either. This has been an awful year or two for movies.

i enjoy gonig to the theatre....to alleviate some of the problems you list, i generally won't go to a movie rated anything less than R on a friday or saturday night, and i usually tell them i'm a student (which, technically speaking, i am). i also usually stay away from the opening night fiascos.

having a 'home theatre' is nice, but to me there's nothing like seeing a movie in a theatre, even one with lousy stadium seating.

i am not boycotting however i haven't been to see a movie in the theater for at least a month. there just hasn't been anything interesting there.

whenever i go i get the student discount and i don't purchase any popcorn or beverages. this helps to keep the cost down.

No boycotting here...

The last few times I've gone to the theater is a local no-frills theater down the street. There are less crowds, thus less assholes, teeny boppers etc. At the hip, happening theater the crowds are different and chock full of annoying people.

I don't go much anymore. The last movie I saw in the theater was Million Dollar Baby on Oscar night.

Edit: Oops, I forgot. It was actually Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

It hasn't been a case of not having anything worth seeing for me. The overall "theater experience" has just gone down the shitter in recent years. With all of the technological increases, theaters have no excuse for shitty sound, seating and picture. My home theater blows half the theaters out of the water. The one theater with decent sound in my area closed down a year ago, and all that's left is one decent IMAX screen and a ton of Regal theaters (with shitty sound). It's simply not worth $10 per ticket for that kind of experience.

i'm not "boycotting" them per say, but we hardly go to the movies anymore. if something good comes out (Star Wars), we'll go, but its not really worth it anymore.

and my girls dad gets bootlegs, so if i'm on the fence about seeing something, i'll just ask him to get it and watch it at home.

The last movie I saw at the theater was Devil's Rejects. There have been some I've wanted to see, but its just too expensive. Plus, there are thousands of DVDs that I want but don't yet have, so I'd usually rather buy one of them than pay the same price to watch a movie that I might hate. Although if the rumored Land of the Dead Unrated theatrical release happens, I'll be there at least twice.

I only go when there's something I really want to see, and since I have "offbeat" taste, either a) there aren't many annoying teens and babies in the audience or b ) it's just not showing here at all.

I don't "boycott" the theater, but I only go like once or twice a year.

There are much better ways to spend your time...

I go to the theatre all the time. I only go to high quality theatres, so that eliminates picture and sound problems. I usually go early in the day, so that eliminates a lot of the annoyances. Because I go to really good theatres, I have to deal with high prices, but it's worth it to see movies projected on a giant screen.

I don't go very often, but I'm not boycotting. If there were a reason for boycotting, it's the 20 minutes of commercials (commercials, NOT trailers) before the fucking movie starts.

Anyone notice the big multi-plexes tanking while the small 2-3 screen theatres stay open indefinitely, even w/o big crowds?
