Post subject: teachers lying to students... is it okay?

a few things have bothered me of late about teachers and their willingness to outright lie to kids to get them to behave or act accordingly
1) students have been eating these Crystal Light packages (the ones you add to 20 oz. of water)... anyway, i witnessed a teacher telling him that they cause cancer and if he continues to eat them, he will surely get cancer in the next month... yes, she said month... now, i dont know if there is any truth to this due to the acidity of the powder, but it just pissed me off to hear a teacher tell such b.s. to a kid to get him to follow along
2) a student asked if crossing his eyes would really make them stick... i said "no, it's an old wive's tale" and a lady teacher nearly tackled me for telling the kid the truth... teh teacher was like, "it definitely will make them stick at some point"... i wanted to say something so badly, but i would never verbally attack a teacher in front of a student... not professional
anyway, these are 12, 13, and 14 yearold kids... do you think it is okay to out-and-out lie to these kids so they follow along... im sure there are a lot of other things taht take place in schools (i.e. the pledge) that are b.s. along these lines... but these two instances just pissed me off... these kids appreciate honesty and not many teachers are willing to give it... any thoughts?...btw, these are two different teachers... so im sure this shit happens a lot and is considered acceptable by a lot of them... i kow the kids want honesty, and that's what i feel it is my job to give them

as a teacher of 14-17 year olds i dont lie to them. if its something like that i say i dont know for sure, but ive never heard of it happening. if i dont like a behavior i just say dont do it, its my class and if you want to do that do it later or you can come in at lunch and we can talk about it more.
but if you keep lying to them it teaches them not to trust.

How is this even a debate? Those lies don't even have a purpose, do they? They appear to just be lies for the sake of lying.

they are lies to keep the kids from doing certain things... instead of teacher A saying, "hey, you are not allowed to have candy or anything like it in my classroom", they just go ahead and put the fear of cancer and death into their student
teacher B could just say, "don't cross your eyes, because it makes you look stupid and you need to act mature at this age".... instead they decide to use fear as a their method
so many teachers use fear as a tool, and it's just not right... i have no idea where they get this idea from

Crystal Light will not give you cancer in a month.
however, neither will smoking a cigerrette.
Crystal Light contains nutra sweet. artificial, chemical sweetener... which some types of have cause cancer in animals. While i dont condone the "lie" of saying its going to happen in a month, there may be some long term validity to the health issue and crystal light.

ive come to realize everything can be bad for you in excess... i remember hearing or reading a story about a guy who was a complete health nut and drank some crazy amount of water everyday to clean out his system... turns out he drank too much water and it ended up flushing his system out to the point that it actually killed him... the guy died from drinking too much water... there on out, i figured if water can kill you, just about anything can

THere is some evidence saccarhine causes bladder cancer. No causation relationship has been found.

I agree with this completely. If telling the truth is going to make the situation harsh or uncomfortable, it's your place to tell the kid that you're not allowed to discuss the situation.

Ehh..... I'll have to disagree, if you are dealing with high schoolers. Life is harsh and uncomfortable. Hiding the truth about the world, history, anything that isn't a personal insult, will only make them less prepared to deal with reality.
Telling the truth is a sign of respect. If the school system won't allow you to speak the truth that's one thing.... If you hide the truth to make an adult feel better, that's wrong.
