On Sunday, October 16, a truly unique political event will take place.
Teaming up with the legendary rock group U2 for a one-night only appearance will be Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.).
The thousand-dollar-a-seat concert has been put together by Sean and Ana Wolfington and will take place at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia in support of Santorum’s re-election, reports NewsMax's James Hirsen.
U2 front man Bono is no stranger to Washington, D.C. He has come often to the nation’s capital to network with politicians on behalf of his many causes.
Santorum met Bono earlier this year, having been introduced by John Kasich, the former Congressman from Ohio and host of Fox News Channel’s "Heartland.”
So what does the Irish rocker have in common with the conservative senator?
As in the case of Santorum, Bono’s religious convictions inform his activities.
The U2 leader shared some of his faith perspectives with the author of the book "Bono in Conversation.” He said, "It’s a mind-blowing concept that the God who created the universe might be looking for company, a real relationship with people.”
Santorum told "Christianity Today” that "faith is a source of morality; it’s a source of virtue; it’s a source of reason. It’s a tremendous influence on my worldview.”

Just like that huh? I would think if this was a legitimate, U2-sponsored fundraiser, there would have been some sort of announcement about it along with the band's endorsement. There's nothing. My guess is Santorum's people got tickets to the show, then sold them for $1,000 a pop.

All respect is gone for this band. (not like there was any to begin with) Their music sucks, they are commercial whores, and now supporting religious nutjobs like Rick Santorum. It makes me sad that PJ even assoicated with them.

Well the way I look at it is U2 is allowed to choose its own way to make money just like you can choose how to spend yours. Do you own an Ipod? If so, maybe you are the whore. Also, who cares if Bono is friends with Rick Santorum?? Can't people choose who they want to be friends with and can't people who aren't alike be friends.
Not to mention let's just forget the millions of dollars Bono and U2 have donated to charity.

agreed, its this kinda music snobbery that keeps some pearl jam fans as isolated pearl jam only people. it's one thing to not like u2's music, but its an entirely different thing to say, "corporate sellouts". they have music that a lot of people like. And they try to make it as accessible as possible. I don't know why rock music is the only music that spites monetary success.
you know, with the exception of a few songs like "in a little while", the band pretty much died after the Achtung Baby/Zooropa era.
and now the Santorum era? it just gets worse and worse...
And the Pearl Jam era of selling out their ideas to back Kerry is any better? Eddie threw away his political idealogy last election for nothing.
So if I scalp Peal Jam tickets saying that the funds are going to a pro-life organization does this mean that Eddie would become pro-life at that point. Interesting.

I remember when The Verve took a ton of shit for putting their Bittersweet Symphony song in a Nike ad. U2 didn't get that same level of shit for their iPod tie in. I guess selling out depends on the cool factor of the company you sell out too.
As for Kerry and Santorum, frankly I don't give a shit about what band backs what politician. I vote my based on my heart and mind, not based on my CD collection. I would prefer that everyone shut up and play, save the politicing for the appropriate time and place... which is not in between encoures.
DATA have posted a statement reacting to 'inaccurate media statements on U2
shows as political fundraisers.'
We're posting the statement here because we've had a number of emails expressing concern about certain media stories people have read.
Jamie Drummond, Executive Director of DATA (debt AIDS trade Africa), the Africa Advocacy group co-founded by Bono said this earlier today:
'Throughout the U2 tour, politicians from both sides have been organizing
fundraisers at the venues or around specific shows. Neither DATA or Bono are involved in these and they cannot be controlled. The U2 concerts are
categorically not fundraisers for any politician - they are rock concerts for U2 fans.'

The Verve doesn't own the rights to the song and did not earn a dime from that advert. It wasn't their decision and infact opposed the move.

There's a difference. Bittersweet symphony was a song that aspired to really mean something and be emotionally affecting. Vertigo was never more than an uptempo rocker.
If alive appeared in a commerical I'd be bothered by it. if All Night did, not so much.
