Nomar dives into Boston Harbor to help women

BOSTON -- Former Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra rescued two women who had fallen into Boston Harbor late last week, his uncle and a witness told the Boston Herald.

Garciaparra, traded to the Chicago Cubs on July 31, 2004, was with his uncle in his Charlestown condominium at about 10 p.m. Friday when they heard a scream and a splash, said the uncle, Victor Garciaparra.

As soon as the All-Star shortstop and two-time American League batting champ ran out the door to help the woman, her friend also fell in, hitting her head on the pier, said Victor Garciaparra, who oversees his nephew's business and charitable ventures.

Victor Garciaparra jumped from the balcony to the water 20 feet below.

"I swam towards them and by the time I reached them, Nomar was already there holding the girls up," he told the newspaper. "But he couldn't get them up without help."

One woman had a large lump on her head and appeared to be unconscious, he said. When she came to, the first thing she said was: "Are you Nomar?" Victor Garciaparra said.

The two men pulled the women from the water. Their husbands arrived and whisked them off to the hospital before the Garciaparras even got their names, he said.

Johnny O'Hara of Natick witnessed the incident from his boat.

"A bunch of us came running over and sure enough, pulling the two girls from the water was Nomar," he told the newspaper. "It was crazy. Nomar was like jumping over walls to get to the girls and the other guy leaped off the balcony. It was unbelievable."

Nomar Garciaparra was unavailable for comment, his uncle said.

On the subject of Nomar, where's he playing next season? I was watching the epic Atlanta versus Houston playoff game, and the commentators were talking about the Braves short stop being a free agent, and the Cubs being in the market for a short stop. Where's Nomar going?

On a side note, Nomar tore his ACL, ruptured his achilles tendon, and sustained a possible career threatening chipped tooth during the rescue operation . . .

And yes, he will be back with the Cubs with a 1 year contract extension.

Anyone else find it odd that these chicks, one after another, fell into the water, and one of them asks "Are you Nomar?" Premeditation, anyone?

I think Nomar may be playing 3B for someone next season, not SS. As a matter of fact, the Sox could use a 3B next year. I know it will never happen, but i'd love to have him back. I know he broods and hates the media here and all of the attention, and basically he'll never play here again, but I loved him as a ballplayer. He's past his prime, but vintage Nomar (99-2002) spraying frozen ropes around the ballpark was awesome. I'll always have a soft spot for him in my baseball heart, and this is a guy who definitely big-leagued me on my one visit into the Sox clubhouse a few years back. Whatever, that was Nomar being Nomar.

I'm going to get to meet both of them in the next couple of weeks.

Nomar moving to third? I wish him well with the move, he seems to have had bad luck with injuries for a few years, be good to see him get back to form again. For the Sox, I'm hoping we get to see what Youkillis can do with an extended run in the side at third base

Don't be surprised if the O's take Nomar to play 3rd, the O's always seem to have a lot of money to spend and might be looking for a little more oomph in the lineup. Of course, the starting pitching will probably be a big offseason target as well.
