Hail, Hail

Is there room for both of us?
Both of us apart?
Are we bound out of obligation?
Is that all we've got?
I get the words, and then i get to thinkin'
I don't wanna think, i wanna feel
And how do i feel?
And how do i...

If you're the only one, will i never be enough?
Hail, hail the lucky ones, i refer to those in love

Swore i'd love you till the day i die, and beyond..
Are we going to the same place? if so, can i come?
It's egg rolling thick and heavy
All the past you carry
Oh, i could be new...
You underestimate me

If you're the only one, will i never be enough?
Hail, hail the lucky ones, i refer to those in love

I sometimes realize i could only be as good as you'll let me
Are you woman enough to be my man?
Bandaged hand in hand

I find it on the run in a race that can't be won
All hail the lucky ones, i refer to those in love
If you're my only one, so could you only one?
I want to be your one, enough...
you won, your one, your one...

Lyrically this one is something of a hidden gem. I was initially somewhat dismissive due to the chorus. I've always thought that a really talented writer can avoid using the word love and for the most part Eddie had managed to do so on all their previous love songs.

What really makes this one is the content of the verses. Not many songs deal reflectively with a frustrated relationships--being in love, and breaking up are done a lot, but this is a song about love stalling, looking at people happily in love, and getting pretty jealous. I'm sure we've all been there before

"Are we bound out of obligation, is that all we got"--is brilliant

"I could be new...you underestimate me" and "I sometimes realize I can only be as good as you let me" are also great

This song really described my failing relationship in college perfectly.

This song is great and I will always remember the live version on Letterman. In fact, they play it often as outro music on the show.

what a great groove this song has and I like it's placement on No Code, really opens it up after Sometimes.

on the best album ever so that is a good start. before i really say down and read the lyrics, i thought it was about someone in love but then after reading the lyrics over and over again, i realized it was about someone that was jealous of all of those that are.

this song really hit home when my 8 year relationship was failing. we were still together because it was comfortable and did not want to leave the security. we were bound out of obligation.

soooo, this song is very powerful for me.

This is actually one of my favorite songs. I really, really like the lyrics.
One of my favorite lyrical lines is "I don't wanna think, I wanna feel"
I am not sure why, but it just reminds me of so many people and how they seem to take everything, including love, for granted.
I also love how it follows sometimes on the album. I think that placement is perfect. No Code in general was when the mainstream PJ craze kind of started dying down. Especially after Who You Are, I told people I was going to the midnight sale, and it was actually the 1st one I was "allowed" to go to, people were like you are nuts. When we were in line waiting for them to start selling the CD was the 1st time I heard Hail, Hail and it was shortly after that night that Pearl Jam became my "favorite" band.

I think there is more going on here than just taking love for granted. I know it was my experience (it sounds like it was soniccred's too) that you get to a point in a failing relationship when you say you are still in love, and probalby mean it to a degree, but it becomes more of an intellectual commitment than anything you feel in a visceral way.

:nice:

I think this is one of Vedder's better moments as a writer. Plus the music is killer, this is easily a top ten PJ song of mine.

oh i agree with what you guys said and no doubt that is a very good interpretation, but like i said, thats just what that line brings to my little mind in a general way. it can really apply to anything.

for example. i guess i think i have a good job, i am just not into it. so while i think i have a good job, i don't necessarily feel that way. so that was just my two cents about that one line.

i love the line "are you woman enough to be my man" the most

very powerful line. the whole songs is just amazing, def. one of my pj favorites too. i agree that it is a very good reminder if you are in a long term relationship...listen to it, and see how you feel..

and what is rare, a powerful, rocking love song on top of it. love it.

'I don't wanna think, I wanna feel...
How do I...'

Is one of the best delivered lines in the collection. And that's saying something.

The into to the song always scares the bejebus outta me. You think that I would have learned by now to turn the volume down once Sometimes finishes.

This song makes me think of someone I was with about 5 years ago. It is a long complicated story that I would rather not think about. lol

Hail, Hail is a great song and is in my top 10 by PJ.

That's hillarious! Same thing always happens to me. I'm all chill and relaxed listening to Sometimes, then bam Hail Hail blast on, stops my heart and blows a speaker.

I like some of the live versions when Ed sings "how do I fucking feel" -- No particular reason other than I like curse words.

i had my little radio turned up the other day while i was listening to sometimes in the shower, then BAM, hail hail starts, i thought i blew my speakers.

this is a great song, great lyrics, great hard rocking music. it seems like this is one of the few set list staples that no one hates.

I don't hate it (there aren't many live songs I hate) but Hail Hail is rarely one I'll pop for. I like it better in the studio
