I know we talk a lot about bad announcers around here, but ESPN's entire college football crew is pretty darn good (at least I like em). It took a really bad analyst (some guy named Desmond who can't talk and said the word 'magnificently' twice in the span of 30 seconds), to help me realize how good some of these guys really are. Ron Franklin, ESPN's night-time college play-by-play guy, may have the best voice in all of commentating. Fowler is really great too. Reese Davis also predominantly does college football, and if you ask me he's the best guy ESPN has period. I realize most hate Corso for his energetic style, but I think he's great. It's unique and adds a whole lot to his commentary.

Going outside of ESPN, the the solid commentators are everywhere... Jackson, Nessler, Mussburger, Davies... there's tons, and you really have to dig into those ESPN 2 Rutgers-UCONN games to find the ones that stink.

Anyway, what do yall think? I think pound-for-pound, college football announcers are the best of any sport.

chris fowler and kirk herstreit are top notch. corso can get annoying though.

ron franklin and mike gottfried have always been excellent.

nessler is also really good.

there are a fair share of shitty ones out there though (todd blackledge, bob davie) and keith jackson should have stayed retired.

it seems to me that people here bitch way too much about announcers. this praise is nice to see.

That would be Heisman-winner and Super Bowl MVP Desmond Howard you are referring to. And I agree, announcing isn't his strong point. But I'm sure ESPN had to scramble to find someone to replace Trev Alberts after he was fired.

Yeah you're right. He is on the road with them on Saturdays, but he is usually in the studio on Thursdays. Lou Holtz seems to be doing a lot of the Saturday in-studio duties, and he is just as bad as Howard.

I didn't realize that was Desmond Howard... he was pretty bad.

But I like Mark May a lot. I don't agree with his arguments most of the time (I usually ended up siding with Alberts in their little argument time), but I think he makes some really good points and is pretty articulate. I also like Bob Davies.

Why was Trev Alberts fired, anyway? I must have been on vacation that week and missed it.

Anyway, Bill Curry is absolutely the worst, and Bob Davie is pretty bad as well. For the most part, though, the ESPN guys that do college football are good. Even the CBS and ABC guys are pretty good.

Wow, who could be unhappy having a job as a football analyst at ESPN? He was probably making some big bucks too.

Mark May kinda annoys me but he's in the studio with Holtz anyway so i don't consider him a part of the "crew". Fowler, Corso and Herb are the real crew. Big thumbs up for them.
