Have a drink, they're buying
Bottom of, bottle of denial
Big guy, big eye, watchin me
Have to wonder what it sees
Progress laced with ramifications
Freedom's big plunge

Pull the innocent from a crowd
Raise the sticks then bring em down
If they fail to obey
If they fail to obey

For every tool they lend us
A loss of independence
I pledge my grievance to the flag
Cause you don't give blood then take it back again
We're all deserving something more

Progress, taste it, invest-it-all
Champagne breakfast for everyone

Break the innocent when they're proud
Raise the stakes then bring em down
If they fail to obey
Oh if they fail to obey

Pledge your grievance to the flag
C'mon, don't give blood then take it back again
We're all deserving something more

I want to breathe
Follow the scene
I want to taste
Everyone i see
I want to run when i'm up high
I want to run into the sea
I only want life to be...
I just want to be...
I will feel alive as long as I am free...

Easily my favorite song off Binaural, and the best political song they ever wrote. A ton of great lines. My favorite is probably

Pledge your grievance to the flag.

That's what democracy is supposed to be about--being able to use the political process to address your legitimate needs. A country that is unable to do that is unable to call itself democratic, and when the needs of the wealthy and powerful trump the needs and interests of the commons the system is broken and needs to be resisted.

I wish they made a video for this focusing on the WTO protests. It could have fit nicely with DTE.

I was SO excited for Binaural when they played this on Letterman. One of Eddie's finest songs.

I believe it was inspired by the World Trade Orgainization protests (which many people think marked the rebirth of an active progressive movement in the US) in Seattle while they were recording Binaural

that must be it. i remember reading an article about it a while ago, but i forgot what the specific inspiration was.

i remember hearing this on letterman, such a great performance.

i wasn't a big fan of it when i first heard binaural, but then I heard it live on one of the '00 bootlegs and fell in love. It had a lot of energy, especially in the last part.

Then I got to see it in Asheville for the VFC. 2nd tune, right after Sometimes. It just fit in perfect with the event. I was really hoping for it at the borgata...

It got nominated for a grammy, so I was suprised that it didn't make it. There was room to squeeze it on.

Easily one of the best hard-rocking songs the band has ever laid down on record. The 1-2-3 punch of "Of the Girl," "Grievance" and "Rival" is simply fucking amazing.

The song has to do with the post industrial modern world, a world in which we have slowly become enslaved by the instruments that are supposed to make the world better.

Henry David Thoreau (I know, he's been dead a long time) wrote that "Men are tools of their tools." The more tools you have, the more freedom you give up. Think even of the computer you are on. What did we gain? What have we lost? Get rid of your computers for a few weeks and see what happens.

"progress, taste it, invest-it-all
champagne breakfast for everyone."

Pretty pathetic reward for all that slave labor.

I know what happens. I have way too much e-mail sitting in my in box when I get back

I think that analysis makes more sense for a song like DTE. Grievance (and especially the protests that inspired it) are much more about making the benefits of modernity equitable and available to everyone, and ending the exploitative nature of 'unregulated' markets. It is about the illusion of fairness in an unfair system. It's not a critque of modernity itself.
