Well they kind of liked it - I got pissed at comments like...
"increasingly exhausted songwriting that seems to have worsened with each new album."
"Unbelievable as it may have seemed 10 years ago, the Pearl Jam of today has shrunk to the dreaded stature of a cult band. Its small, loyal but fast diminishing fanbase has been subjected to forced, fruitless works that are, at best, academic in nature (like the vacuous, unlistenable Riot Act of 2002). At worst, they are unfocused and listless in overall temperament."

Good call - I guess it's just that I've always thought that the band has gotten stronger with each album. Personally I love Riot Act and think it's one of if not their best...so far

They have shrunk to a cult band--maybe the biggest in the world but still a cult band. Isn't that what they wanted though? We can't celebrate it and get mad at others for acknowleding it, and whether you like Riot Act or not compared to their earlier work most people seem to agree it is less vital. It's telling that only four songs from binaural and riot act made the disc at all.

I didn't get the memo that Riot Act was unlistenable.

Maybe not. I definitely remember a thread that people jumped all over a review of the greatest hits album, and the review had a tone very similar to this one.
