This stems from a discussion in the "What college did you attend" thread in GD.
My stance is this. I have a pet peeve against college fans who talk immense amounts of trash about a school that they have no connection to. I think this should be reserved for alumni or those with some real connection (family member attends/attended, works there, etc).
Now, I'm not saying you can't root for any college team you want. Go for it. I just hate hearing someone rant on about how great "they" are and how much my team sucks, when they'd be lucky if the admission office of "their" school even read their application.
Obviously, this doesn't hold true for everyone, as situations can cause people to attend certain schools when they're fully qualified for any of their choice.
So who's with me? Do you think a person who spouts wildly and loudly about a certain school loses some oomph if they haven't attended, as opposed to someone who does the same and graduated from said school?

i think it's worth noting how this all got started... instead of you just kind of dodging this thread and putting your "spin" on things

Wait a minute, you're not even a Tar Heel alum? You need to tone down the spouting in the Sports forum then.
yeah... i only moved 1,000 miles to be closer to the action... i guess im not that big of a fan
One of the things I despise most is a college sports fan who's constantly talking trash about a school they have no connection to (this is directed mostly at 85% of the "fans" you can find at any game at Michigan Stadium). Now, if one of your parents, siblings, grandparents, etc, went to or work for NC, I'll let it slide.
that's one of the most retarded comments ive ever heard... i guess somebody who didnt go to college shouldnt be allowed to root for any college teams
my best friend will be upset when i tell him that he is not a true illini fan even though he has had season tickets for 6 years, has an entire basement dedicated to the illini (along with 12 orange stadium seats), drives 100 miles to every home game (snow or rain), etc. etc.... sorry he couldnt afford to go to uofi or that my parents couldnt foot the bill for me to go to school out of state...

I agree 100 percent. It's kind of weird...

You're right, I should have put a link. By no way do I think your friend isn't a true Illini fan. However, I'd take ranting from an Illini alum far better than from him. That's just me.

btw... i was accepted at the University of Illinois, but decided i'd have a better time at SIU where i wasnt forced to be in some stupid frat to have a good time... and i couldnt be happier in that decision
how about the time i drove nearly 2,000 miles to san antonio with tickets to see carolina play utah in the final four along with tickets for the title game... when the heels were upset by utah, i sold my championship game tickets for 40 bucks a pop, cause i was too upset to watch the fucking thing... maybe this makes me worthy of being a carolina fan?
saturday im going to the carolina coaching clinic and listening to coach williams and his entire staff, and then i get to see this year's squad practice from 2-4... maybe i can ask them if im allowed to be a fan

what about somebody who went to college for 4 years at a school and then failed out?
That still qualifies as a good connection to the school in my mind. Like I mentioned in my initial post, even if it's some connection through a close relative, it's better to me than nothing. Like my parents are huge MSU fans. Neither of them went there, but both my sister and I did, so I feel they have a connection. Maybe it's illogical, but that's how I feel.

I never said you're not allowed to be a fan. I just don't think extreme trash talking from someone with no connection to the school holds as much weight.
In fact, I wasn't a Spartan fan prior to attending. I chose them based on academic programs.

do you get to sleep in the janitor's office with Roc?
wait a sec, that's a poor comparison. At least Rudy finally got into ND and made the team. You're basically a pre-acceptance Rudy

so that worked for you.... i didnt have the opportunity, nor did i want to go to college 1,000 miles from home... your logic is way off here...
i live here now, and it's funny because so many people think i went to chapel hill because im such an obsessed heels fan... a guy who DID go to unc told me the other day that i'm probably a truer carolina fan than he has ever met...
now, if you want to start talking about the bandwagon jumpers, im all with ya...

Most of my anger is definitely aimed at bandwagon jumpers, this is true. There's still a part of me that feels this way no matter how big of a fan you are, though. I admitted it may be illogical, just how I feel.

and that's fine if that's how you feel... but you have to understand how upset someone who has spent their entire life living and dying with a team could be a bit upset... im sorry if i kind of came off like an ass, but let's just say you struck a nerve

i didnt go to Michigan, but i've been a fan ever since i saw their helmets when i was in 3rd grade. i have boxes and boxes in my basement filled with michigan stuff. i know there was no chance of me getting accepted there, and even if i did, there is no way it could have financially happened.
my cousin did go there and my aunt and uncle still live in ann arbor even though she graduated about 5 years ago (they moved there from missouri when she got accepted.) i do hear what you are saying though Jason. i've been a fan longer and take the losses harder than her, but she definitely has a connection that i don't.
i just have a problem with people whos favorite team changes with whoever is at the top of the rankings. i will support Michigan through and through as long as i live, even though i didnt go there.
