After you watch Evil Dead II, I'd highly recommened that you watch it again with the commentary on. It's hilarious and makes the whole movie seem better. The Army of Darkness commentary is pretty good, too. Sam and Bruce are one funny combination.
There's some shit there. The Evil Deads, which though entertaining, are not GOOD movies. The Quick and the Dead? For the Love of the Game? The Gift ... now The Gift had Katie Holmes' titties, but other than that ... meh!

I think what you can take from this is that while mainstream audiences and critics tend to snub true horror flicks, and even when they do watch them they'll just classify it as entertainment, they're just as good as any other movies. It doesn't have to be high drama or completely pretentious to a a good movie and the fact that Raimi and Jackson did quite a few genre pics before going on to make huge movies that the world would embrace kind of hammers this home.
Watch the "shaky cam/demon perspective" stuff from Evil Dead and then watch the web-slinging sequences in Spiderman. Hmm...wonder where he first learned that trick? Same goes for the darker scenes with the Orcs and monsters in LOTR.

I think I caught some "Requiem to a Dream" camera work in Evil Dead too. I guess the only reason I qualified Evil Dead as "not good" was the low budget. It was quite impressive for the time and the budget.

Now you're talking. The fact that you're even watching a movie as old as Evil Dead today and enjoying it speaks volumes for it's quality.

I just watched this whole trilogy.
What a weird bunch of movies. The first one really is an actual horror movie with some pretty frightening moments. Evil Dead II interjects alot more comedy, which is good. At the end where Ash ends up in the other world you are like "what the fuck is this?".
Army of Darkness is just hilarious. Pure comedy.
I just find it interesting how this series evolved. It really is great. Raimi never takes himself too seriously in any of them.

evil dead II is better... its the same exact movie as the first... just a bigger budget, slightly better props/graphics... and no tree rape that i can think of...
i think its funny how the character "linda", although we see or told about the same thing happen to her in ed I, edII, and army of darkness... she is played by different people... although in AOD she is played by Bridget Fonda (random cameo even for her!)

AOD is hands down the best movie ever. I've seen it more times than anything else I own.
I've also bought it about 9 times in different formats and cuts.

The Evil Dead=97% Horror, 3% Humor (Very, very dark humor) Evil Dead II=65% Humor, 35% Horror (Though it's still pretty funny) Army of Darkness=99% Humor, 1% Horror (One of the funniest movies ever)

This is all kinds of wrong. EDII is NOT EVEN CLOSE to being the same exact movie as the first. So what if the budget was slightly bigger? I'm assuming by "props/graphics" (wtf?), you mean special effects. Really, when it comes to a movie like this, special effects boil down to one thing: gore. The Evil Dead's gore beats Evil Dead II's gore by five hundred million miles. And not having a tree rape scene is supposed to be a good thing?
