For some strange reason, I've always liked ol' Jimmy.
It's nice to see a democrat actually take a stand against abortion, rather than the usual vapid "I don't believe in it but I'm not going to tell someone else what to believe".
I wonder if Jimmy would make an exception for rape and incest?
Former President Jimmy Carter yesterday condemned all abortions and chastised his party for its intolerance of candidates and nominees who oppose abortion.
"I never have felt that any abortion should be committed -- I think each abortion is the result of a series of errors," he told reporters over breakfast at the Ritz-CarltonHotel, while across town Senate Democrats deliberated whether to filibuster the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. because he may share President Bush and Mr. Carter's abhorrence of abortion.
"These things impact other issues on which [Mr. Bush] and I basically agree," the Georgia Democrat said. "I've never been convinced, if you let me inject my Christianity into it, that Jesus Christ would approve abortion."
Mr. Carter said his party's congressional leadership only hurts Democrats by making a rigid pro-abortion rights stand the criterion for assessing judicial nominees.
"I have always thought it was not in the mainstream of the American public to be extremely liberal on many issues," Mr. Carter said. "I think our party's leaders -- some of them -- are overemphasizing the abortion issue."
While Mr. Carter has previously expressed ambivalence about abortion, his statements yesterday were "astonishing," said Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute at Concerned Women for America.
"He has long professed to be an evangelical Christian and yet he had embraced virtually all the liberal political agenda," said Mr. Knight. "Maybe with Jimmy Carter saying things he never uttered before, more liberals will rethink their worship of abortion as the high holy sacrament of liberalism."
Running for president in 1976 -- just three years after the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision -- Mr. Carter took a moderate stance.
"I think abortion is wrong and that the government ought never do anything to encourage abortion," he said during that campaign. "But I do not favor a constitutional amendment which would prohibit all abortions, nor one that would give states [a] local option to ban abortions."
In Washington to promote his latest book, "Our Enduring Values," Mr. Carter acknowledged he made mistakes in office.
"I can't deny I'm a better ex-president than I was a president," said Mr. Carter, who in recent years has traveled the globe with his wife Rosalyn, "trying to help hold 61 elections" in developing countries.
He has been outspoken in condemning Mr. Bush's policy toward Iraq. "I think all Christians -- and certainly all Baptists -- are different," Mr. Carter said yesterday. "I have a commitment to worship the Prince of Peace, not the Prince of Preemptive War."
But he praised Mr. Bush's policy toward war-torn Sudan, and declared that the best treatment he has received since leaving the Oval Office was from the first President Bush, and the second-best treatment he got was during the Reagan administration, especially from Secretary of State George P. Shultz. The worst treatment he's received, the former president said, was from President Clinton.
Mr. Carter said his party lost the 2004 presidential elections and lost House and Senate seats because Democratic leaders failed "to demonstrate a compatibility with the deeply religious people in this country. I think that absence hurt a lot."
Democrats must "let the deeply religious people and the moderates on social issues like abortion feel that the Democratic party cares about them and understands them," he said, adding that many Democrats, like him, "have some concern about, say, late-term abortions, where you kill a baby as it's emerging from its mother's womb."

The one thing I have to ask of those that are anti-abortion is this...
If it is banned, do you think women will stop getting them? Or will it just be much less safe for them than it is now?

A.) It would not be government sponsored
B.) Because it is against the law, it would be harder and less safe to get one, hense cutting down on the amount
C.) Those stupid enough to still go through with it will either die or become horribly disfigured as a result, thus cutting down on more

nice. I never get tired of the right calling it pro-abortion, like women can't wait to abort all the babies they have. Its called pro-choice for a reason. Carter did say that he sees an exception for health reasons and for incest and rape. He is coming from the stance of wwjd. He also said that he felt as a president it was his job instead of campaigning against abortion to create an alternative and this is why he created WIC. Because statisticc showed that most women who get abortions do it because of financial reasons. Which is more than I ca say for W.

Why is it so easy for you to want to condemn people to death for this procedure? Maybe if we made a law where men would automatically take custody of a child after an unwanted(by the mother) birth, then I might agree to make abortions illegal.

There would be a ton less of them. And with the exception of that small percentage of abortions that I think are reasonable, I really don't care if it is safe for them or not.

women dont get pregnant by themselves, would you wish ill health on the male involved as well?

It seems that everyone is willing to admit that reducing the number of abortions in this country would be a good thing. Precious few, it would also seem, are willing to speak out and discourage unwanted pregnancy and encourage responsible behaviour.

Pregnancy is not an illness nor ill health.
Let's try giving men custody. Currently it's a sexist system where a man has no rights except to pay child support. It's time for alternatives.

I never said pregnancy was an illness, but the last couple entries said if a woman was forced to have a back allie abortion they didn't care about the health of a woman aftr, thats the health and ill will of which i speak. And yes change up the system totally, give men custody and make woman pay child support, I am all for that.

I didn't wish ill health, I just don't care either way. If someone makes the idiotic choice of having some sketchy back alley abortion, then they are making a horrible decision as is. I wouldn't want them do die in the procedure. And it is ridiculous to talk about men in the matter at all since they are not given a choice one way or another as is.
I used to be pro choice, but we have over a million abortions in this country each year, and that is just fucked up. That is well beyond the pregnant 15 year old, the rape victim, and the mother who is risking her own health. I have read statistics that over 40% of people who have abortions have already had one before. I still do not believe the government should regulate it, but I think our country is pretty sick in the way we promote it. It is a cultural disease of defending irresponsibility.

But your correct in a way. Alot of it I fear has to do with womens own lack of self worth, which leads them to have sex/unprotected sex with abusive husbands and/or men they dont know well enough to have children with. Then to solve their prob. they have abortions. I wish women would be smarter and not get into those situations to begin with. And sadley enough you are right, one of my best friends has had 2 with the guy she is married to, she was not on birth control and he "hated" to use protection. So to solve their "we dont have enought money" issue they had abortions. Which I see as a little fucked up. Its actions like these that mire the agruments for this debate. Their are situatins where I think it needs to be legal and safe to help people, but the prior story is sickening.

Hate to say it, but your friends may just be retarded. No laws either way will help them

I take exception to your saying a woman would be forced to have a back alley abortion. How about carry the baby to term and either grant custody to the father or give it up for adoption. Your line of thinking would make crime legal as we wouldn't want to force criminals going to jail. I know that's hyperbole but it uses the same logic. Or how about every controlled substance should be legal, as when they're not legal there's always some idiot thinking they are forced to but the black market goods with no quality control. Are you also against perscription drugs for the same reason? Should everything be over-the-counter?
