Mayor Wants To Chop Off Thumbs, Whip Troublemakers

POSTED: 10:22 am EST November 4, 2005

RENO, Nev. -- Off with their thumbs!

That's the suggestion of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.

He said graffiti artists caught defacing freeways should get their thumbs cut off -- on TV no less.

Goodman, appearing on the "Nevada Newsmakers" television show in Reno, said efforts are made to have beautiful highway landscaping, including paintings, and "These punks come along and deface it. I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb."

Goodman also told the TV show that whippings or canings should be brought back for kids who get into trouble.

Goodman said he's dead serious about his crime-fighting suggestions. But he added there should be a trial before any whippings or thumb-choppings.

Goodman said society has to do something about repeat troublemakers who just don't learn.

Another panelist, a Nevada State University system regent, responded by saying that cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and that Goodman should "Use his head for something other than a hat rack."

Reno 911 ought to incorporate these ideas in their script.

This doesn't surprise me knowing Goodman's background. He was the attorney for all the big mob guys in the '70s and '80s. I believe he plays himself in Casino.

Wait.

You're all for chopping off the thumbs of people who vandalize. Basically petty criminals. But your totally opposed to sleep depriving, and using barking dogs, or hell...harmlessly stacking people into naked piles and humiliating them, when THEY ARE TRYING TO KILL YOU!

I really hope the remarks here are in jest. But knowing the track record as of late.

We need a lawyer- my knowledge of American justice is imperfect; isn't there something in the Bill of Rights against cruel and unusual punishment?

Where's David?

Cutting the thumbs off of vandalizers is never, ever going to happen. Relax. This isn't Saudi Arabia.

I'm going to go ahead and say this because you're mucking up other posts with your ignorance.

I don't support this. My comments are sarcastic. The idea that someone would support cutting off thumbs for graffiti is so comical and outrageous to me, that I didn't think the  was necessary.

Well, ya see, I've gotten myself into trouble without using that particular emoticon as well. That is why I am always sure to use it now.

I hope it makes you mad. It better. Or else I'll throw the bullshit flag. I'm still indicting the rest of these idiots with blatant hypocricy though.

On a side note. Nobody steals shit in an Islamic society.

This may be your most amazing post yet. Your ability to be blinded by what you believe to be true is utterly astounding.
