So, I don't have too much trouble coming up with musical ideas, but damned if I can write some fucking lyrics. I have ideas of what I want to write about, but when it comes to actually putting something down, I fell like it's all rubbish. This is especially frustrating since writing has always been one of my stronger suits creatively--hell, I write for a living now. But for some reason it just doesn't come easy to me. Any advice?

1. remove all erasers from your pencils and pry the backspace key off your computer. no scratching out or tearing things up, either. too often the editor-hand squelches the writer hand.

2. ray bradbury once said that if you're a poet, write a poem every single day, because there's no way you can possibly write 365 shitty poems in a row. i suppose the same could apply to lyrics.

write everything that comes to your mind, every word, phrase, anything that rings a bell, even if it comes from a tv add, a tv show, someone passing by you on the sidewalk, something you read on a wall, a book, a magazine. i carry a small notebook in my bag for that. and i have my notebook at home. i mean, good old paper notebooks (i use pencils...) make sure you write down the source. sometimes lyrics come as a whole, sometimes it takes months for scattered phrases to come together. sometimes they wash over you, like a storm... the more you open yourself to them, the more they come to you. it's the best thing in the world. maybe it's because english is not my native language, i try to keep it simple... listening to music helps too. good luck!
