I've seen them printed in various places, but how reliable are these sources? I hear Eddie say "never knew when their was a fox so hard to bag", not "boxer or the bag". What could "boxer or the bag" possibly mean? Surely EV put more thought into his lyrics than that. Am I alone on this. Just wondering...

I don't know about the whole song, it's one of the fussiest ones around....

But, those lines you mentioned are pretty easy I think:

"Never knew when there was a fox so hard to bag" --that's someone surprised that a fox they are hunting is more elusive than expected

"Boxer or bag" --Boxers practice their sport by punching a hanging bag....the bag is the target, the boxer is the aggressor. If you're not sure whether you're the boxer or the bag, you're not sure whether you're the aggressor or the receiver of the aggression.

Does that help?

"A fox so hard to bag" would mean a woman so hard to catch."I never knew when there was a"... woman so hard to catch. Perhaps? I think he's singing (mumbling?) about a woman, though...

Yeah, I was thinking it meant a woman too. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

It's boxer or the bag, not the fox thing.

On an average day, that's true. I think the person above was saying that one time the other line was substituted in a live performance.

i got the lyrics from L@TG, i think they're the ones that make more sense. i'll get them at home and post later. the lost dogs booklet explains that YL was a kind of improv by Mike and Ed just tossed some words and i guess nobody knows what it's about, not even Ed.

You know, at first I had no idea what he was saying, but I did hear one version where I was sure that he said "And my brother will be coming home in a box or a bag". So thats what I hear just about every time now.
And I think it makes sense, he's coming home either in a coffin or a body-bag.
Ah, but what do I know?
Interested to see what others think the words are. Never would have thought it was "Boxer or a bag"

Peace
:-p

he does seem to sing a different version every time...so i guess there aren't "lyrics" per se

didn't he just make up a bunch of phrases that did not go together as a sarcastic joke? That is what I have heard. It is Boxer or the bag.

It's a box or a bag.

As in a coffin or body bag. I used to think it was the boxer or the bag as well, and that could fit. But recently (live) he's been singing "in a box or a bag"...

Not to be a dork here, but Yellow Ledbetter was originally written about the first Gulf War. He's singing about a soldier coming home dead in a "box or a bag"... but then again, I could be dead wrong because "boxer or bag" makes good sense too.

Recipe for lyrics to YL:

Drink 3 bottles of wine, attempt to sing.

The rest is open to interpetation.

When it's live and we all sing our own versions it's the coolest thing ever. We are all wrong and right at the same time.

The real question is: "Will the lyrics from the recording session ever be relased?"

Ive had this debate with people before.
Whether you choose to hear boxer or the bag, or box o-or the bag is up to you, but the fact is the song is about war and i feel box o-or the bag makes more sense - especially since Live At The Garden kinda confirms it - i dont think his brother would come home in a boxer :?

I can see boxer making sense, but box o-or seems to be the one for me.

As has been stated, it could be both depending on his mood

well i always though the boxer or a bag, is a coffin or a body bag, cause i'm pretty sure that the song is about eddies friend who goes to war... and all those people who say the song is about nothing and that the lyrics were improvised obviously haven't heard the improvised recorded version because the lyrics changed a lot from the improved to the recording

it also could be a "box or.. or a bag" with an emotional stutter, but i don't really believe that although eddie is a who fan an we all know daltreys stuttering on my generation
