I'mInHiding
I shut and locked the front door No way in or out I turned and walked the hallway And pulled the curtains down I knelt and emptied the mouth Of every plug around
But nothing's sound Oh.. nothing's sound
I stayed here where my last step left me Ignored all my rounds Soon i was seeing visions, And cracks along the walls
They were upside down
I swallow my words to keep from lying I swallow my fist just to keep from biting... biting, biting I swallowed my breath and went deep, i was diving, diving I surfaced when all of my being was enlightened Now...i'm
I'm in hiding I'm in hiding I'm in hiding
It's been about three days now since i've been aground No longer overwhelmed and it seems so simple now It's funny when things change so much It's all a state of mind
I swallowed my words to keep from lying I swallowed my fist just to keep from biting... biting, biting I swallowed my breath and went deep, i was diving, i was diving I surfaced and all of my being was enlightened Now i'm
I'm in hiding I'm in hiding I'm in hiding I'm in hiding I'm in hiding I'm in hiding...

In Hiding is a good song, and a great one live, but I must confess that it is not one of my favorites. It has the same problem for me that most of their post No Code anthems do (Faithfull, Light Years, Love Boat Captain). It feels a bit like a demo--slightly incomplete. I don't know if it is the guitar sound, or Eddie's vocals, or what (probably the later in most cases). But I always thought that all of these songs would have sounded better on Vs.
Lyrically I'm not a huge fan of this one, but the pre-chorus (I swallowed my words...) is great.

I remember the first time I heard In Hiding. I sat down with a spliff and listened to Yield the whole way through. After Low Light, an interesting, classic rock style song came on.
I loved the intro, the delicate guitar under the verses, and the fact that it had two verses before the pre-chorus- sweet anticipation. And then the song explodes before going back down a notch, and I think this is what I love about it. It's a big rock song, but very understated. Listen to the solo and it's all of three notes, but still beautiful. And of course the pre-chorus then the chorus is just vintage Pearl Jam.

I have yet to hear a live version I like better than the studio.... During the chorus (and this is the same w/ Faithfull) Matt doesn't let the cymbols ring like Jack did, and IMO the cybols really add to the chorus. It sounds like Matt just goes through the motions and for me the song loses some the emotional impact as a result.

I love those lyrics, really gets into the mind of Mr. Vedder. Over the past few years, '98 tour to present, you can really tell Vedder has lightened up a bit...

Great song. But live... I don't know. Mike already said it's the most difficult song to play live and I enjoy their efforts, but they never sound like the album version.

Thanks for doin In Hiding...one of my favorites...IMO probably my favorite song that Stone was behind on guitar, I love the little riff in D..especially at the very end...I don't think I've ever heard them play it when I've seen them but the bootleg versions aren't nearly as good as the studio of versions so I believe it when that one dude said Mike called it one the hardest songs to rock live, I hope on the next US tour that they make it more of a regular because, it sorta reminds me of Given to Fly a little in how the song seems to build and in the chorus it just rocks the fuck out and the guitar parts just blend beautifully...I think I'm gonna go twist up a spliff and jam to that song right now

This always surprises me. It's not a complicated song, I'm not an excellent guitarist and I can play it in my sleep; I think it's down to the build up before the pre-chorus, there's a very loose feel to it, perhaps Matt is too tight as a drummer to recapture that groove?

This is definitely one of my favorite PJ tunes. When I first got Yield, this was the song that I listened to over and over, there was just something about it.
"it's funny when things change so much, it's all a state of mind" are some of my favorite lyrics from any song.
