Can't Keep

I wanna shake, i wanna wind out
I wanna leave this mind and shout
I've lived all this life
Like an ocean in disguise
I don't live forever
You can't keep me here...

I wanna race with the sundown
I want a last breath that i don't let out
Forgive every being
The bad feelings, it's just me
I won't wait for answers
You can't keep me here...

I wanna rise and say goodnight
I wanna take a look on the other side
I've lived all these lives
It's been wonderful at night
I will live forever
You can't keep me here...

Probalby my favorite set of lyrics off of Riot Act (excluding Thumbing My Way) and definitely one of the highlights of the album. I tend to prefer the in your face ass kicking starts to albums but this has a captivating, mysterious, ethereal quality to it that fits the subject matter very well. Kind of like a more interesting Of A Girl.

There is a really empowering sense of detatchment to the song. It is not a statement of quiet defiance like Indifference, and it lacks the searching you find in some of No Code's better moments. Instead there is a calm, peaceful realization that we are in control of our lives, and that they are ours to do with as we see fit---and while this isn't necessarily a political song, you can tie this into the overall political message of Riot Act fairly well.

Some really great lines here

I've lived all this life like an ocean in disguise
I wanna race with the sundown
I want a last breath that I don't let out
It's been wonderful at night (I love listening to this song at night walking my dog when the world is peaceful and still)

and of course

I will live forever, you can't keep me here

Two last things.

As much as I love the album version I kind of miss the fast ukelele version

And it's great when they change the lyrics live to "it'll be wonderful tonight"--becuase you know it will be.

A really nice opener to RA and even better for a show. To me, I have a different take on it depending if live or not. Album: I would say it is about mortality and the legacy left that is huge (ie ocean) but feeling just like a normal person who has had a very special, perhaps undeserved life. Coming to this acceptance...
Live: Lets make this show great!

I love the 2nd verse

I wanna race with the sundown
I want a last breath that i don't let out
Forgive every being
The bad feelings, it's just me
I won't wait for answers
You can't keep me here...

I don't need to say more (except can we have Faithfull or Present Tense soon)

Damn do I love this song. Matt's drumming is perfect, the lyrics are beautiful, and I think its one of the greatest-sounding live songs the band have created.

And speaking of live versions, I love how Ed changes the lyrics to, "It'll be wonderful tonight" sometimes when it opens a show.

Definitely one of the highlights of Riot Act. "I wanna race with the sundown/ I want a last breath that I don't let out" is one of my favorite couplets of all time.

We can do present tense next (although I feel like someone else already made a request and if they remind me or if I remember that has to come next). I want to wait on Faithfull since I'm trying to keep parity between the albums and we just did In Hiding

But this thread is like two minutes old. Are you bored with it already? :)

No but I can turn invisible and glide a little bit (no flight though and I don't live near many tall buildings)

Not bored - I just wanted to request so I didn't forget. It is giving me something to distract myself from rather than writing my thesis :D

It doesn't seem like there is any special day this thread starts. Maybe it could be a weekly thing on Mondays that you start it?

Now that you've mentioned it, TMY would make a great SOTM as well... I know it would be some time from now, but I'm a patient man.

Thank you stip for chosing this song, I was hoping that it was going to be picked soon.

Can't Keep is my favorite Pearl Jam song, musically, and to me it sounds airy and almost like a wind chime. I really love the layered intro where it starts out with the drums, followed by each guitar, and then the bass and vocals. Eddie sounds absolutely gorgeous with his soft vocals I get the chills when he lets out "keeeeeep meeeee hereeeeee."

When I am having a bad day I grab my headphones and listen to the song, it's so mellow and calming. I hope that I am lucky enough to hear Can't Keep at a show someday.

What is your thesis on? I used to start them on Sundays (i think), and then missed a sunday and started it on tuesdays, but since the In Hiding thread had run its course I thought I'd start this one on monday. Generally they run a week. I'm going to try to keep them on mondays.

Not what I was expecting to hear when I popped Riot Act on for the first time. Pleasent surprise.

great song that has a super positive or a super negative interpretation. I decided for the positive because of the beatiful vibe i get from the song.
