It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

I'm sure every sub movie ever drew from this film.

Just watched this two days ago for the third time. I love the way sound and silence are used to build tension. And I love the expressiveness of the captain's face. There are so many different things going on in his head, and they all seem to be right there for us to see. Great performance. Enjoyable film.

I've always meant to watch this film. Have any of you seen Downfall? Now that was one great German movie!

No, it means "the boot." Also, Nosferatu means "nose ferrets."

This is heavy. It's brilliant though.
