i don't know how this song doesn't have its own thread. this is one of the best pearl jam songs ever, and another example of how pearl jam writes amazing music that doesn't get on their albums - hence, backing up my belief that you need to look not at albums, but periods, to see when they made their best music.

oh, and the state college version is sick.

"Down" is proof that the band can indeed write fun, good-natured songs that still rock. Easily my favorite song from the whole Riot Act recording sessions. I like the acoustic version from Benaroya Hall as well.

Yup. Brain of J, faithful, and GTF are his also. I don't know if down is my favorite from the Riot Act sessions, but definitley in the top 3. Great song. A ton of fun live.

Cool song. Not great, but pretty good. Call me nuts, but it reminds me of R.E.M. (the early stuff), specially the guitar parts.

great song. the first time i heard it live i had no idea what it was.

the lyrics are great, i love how ed can make a song mean two different things to two different people. and mike's music is wonderfully uplifting

i think it was left off of riot act b/c it didnt match the mood of the record, kinda like sad and fatal.

I can see that. The vocals remind me of Bruce Springsteen though

i'm surprised so many people think so highly of it. it's not bad, but i think it's killed the pace and vibe of every live show i've seen it at.

It's great!

I love the

"one day the symptoms fade
think i'll throw these pills away
and if hope could grow from dirt like me
it can be done"

part of the lyrics.

Maybe some of my favorite lyrics.

Awesome. Mike said he wanted it to have more crunch, but I think it sounds great the way it is, and I hope I'm lucky enough to hear it live some day.

When I bought the single for I am mine, I ended up listening to this song more than I am mine. I just love this song...like buggy said, it is a good "feel good" tune.

Yup. Brain of J, faithful, and GTF are his also.

+ Present Tense (with Ed)

Mikey is God

Anyway, Down is so great, I think the band was right that it wouldn't have fitted on Riot Act, but it's still an amazing song and I'm very glad they play it live from time to time. (heard it once 8) )

Pearl Jam needs more feel good songs, they have plenty of dark material. I agree. Down f'in rocks.
