That's gotta be worth some debate. Keep in mind, these are per capita numbers, even a sparsely populated state needs SOME money (I don't know how much money that may be). Keep in mind, one of the issues for NYC Transit workers is terrorism training. Keep in mind Red States and Blue States (it doesn't necessarily go the way you'd think).

It's an absolute joke the way Congress is allocating security funds. Does New Jersey really need air conditioned garbage trucks for some of its municipalities to come from this source? How about Alaska and its bridge to nowhere (connecting the mainland to an island that some 4,000 people call home) costing the taxpayers $100 million out of homeland security funds? Meanwhile, the people searching my bags at O'Hare Int'l Airport are making about $9 an hour. Good times.

That does seem odd, but keep in mind that is not broken down by project. Does missle defense fall under DHS? Defending the alaskan pipeline? Where are nuclear reactors that need protecting? How much was already spent on securing DC/VA/MD/NY before 9/11?

I agree that the money is often wasted, but I have worked on several home security projects and there is very important work being done that the fed doesn't get enough credit for.

The real dangerous part of this is the tactical training being given to redneck police departments. The idea that terrorists could strike anywhere means that (in theory) we need to prepare towns for anti-terror combat. So cities as small as 20k people are gettign SWAT teams. Scary.

I don't think that people are upset at the purpose of Homeland Security and the legitimate use of funds allocated to it but, rather, the pet pork projects Congressmen are illegitimately funding through the use of Homeland Security funds.
