In Xanadu did Kingdom Come
Upon a mariner lost at sea
No compass; none but stars and sun
To watch him 'til Thy will be done -
And let what fate will be.

He's wrapped in tattered tarp and thought
He wonders where his boat is ought -
Where Daily Bread is baked for him?
Where the mighty Seraphim
Will give all riches sought?

His boat is cracked and has no oars
No rudder and no spear for food
He blindly hopes he'll see the shore -
The lands of love and evermore-
Yet decades pass, quiet, rude.

In Xandu did a Sultan walk
and claim a princess soft and fair
Songs of angels blessed her eyes -
While in a boat a mariner lies
Dreaming what he dares.

He knew her once upon a time,
the mariner dreamed in his boat adrift.
"I took her hand and made her mine"
"We dipped our heats in honeyed wine-"
The boat began to shift.

He woke at once and followed tide
And saw some distant sand ahead
He loosed the place where hopes abide
And set his ruined boat to glide
To where the water led.

He saw the hills and mountains high
And streets of gold where soft wind sighs
through tangerie dreams and aquamarines
and to the place where his love sings
Below where eagles fly.

In Xanadu a mariner walked
And let the spirits set him free
Did he at last approach with glee
The love of whom his dreams had talked?
I do not know - for he is me
