I'll throw in my 2c on a couple points.
First, I don't agree with your 2nd to last paragraph. I do think it is incredible that some artists are able to maintain quality for so long, but by no means is it the defining trait of a good musician. Some people are just worse for wear than others. I also disagree slightly about Eddie Vedder, I think his vocals are still top notch.
The rest of the post I agree with fully. Special props for mentioning David Gilmour, too.
I'd like to a band that has incredible longevity and is continuing to make and play quality music. Yes, from thier first album in 1969, to thier continuous tour today. Yes was one of the original progressive rock groups, and to this day they are a mainstay in the genre. Also, Steve Howe is an absolutely astonishing guitar player. Criminally underrated, too. The guy is probably the best pedal steel player I have ever heard, alongside David Gilmour, and his versatility, technical skill, improvisation, and melodic sense is boundless.

they're pretty much as good as they've always been. whether they have always been good or never been good is open to interpretation

I don't think that Vedder's voice is "decaying". He is simply learning how to use his voice in different ways.

You know, I guess there are some bands that always keep it professional, but I was thinking the other day, "Does being perfect make it rock 'n roll?"
I don't think so. I love the screams, the flubs, the growth, and the aging. I love the occassional flat line almost as much as I love the moment where a singer will take something to a higher register.
To me, rock music shouldn't be about perfection. I respect artists who indulge in perfection, but you'll be damned to find me a more than one show on a particular tour.

I agree with this. There are something amazing and sad with those artists. Rock n roll to me is sometimes that live fast die young. I know its cliched and stupid but in my selfish way, hendrix never did have time to suck or jeff buckley never did a superbowl show with britney, and every pic or vid of them is young and sexy and very rock n roll.
