I don't know if this thread exists, i couldn't find it so...
well what do you think the most overrated albums are. I'll list five and try to give some type of reason. Before you start ripping me apart about my selections, know that all of these cds are in my collection and i really do enjoy them. I just think they have too much hype and blown way over board. Let the fun begin.

Image

I just think that time has blown this album up to something massive and to me its a bloated album. I "get" the concept, but the lyrics always seemed thin and a lot of filler seems to be shoved in to make it epic.

Image

The album that made me from enjoying music to becoming obsessed with it. It sounds beyond dated in both production and style. I almost cringe with some of the guitar solos, they feel shoved in there with no real purpose.

Image

Sounds way dated. The songs seem underwritten and the production is thin. Anyone who says this is their fav. NIN album is lying and just trying to act "indie", everyone knows Downward Spiral is 100x better.

Image

Stop saying this is a masterpiece, stop saying this is genius. They may have influenced rock as we know it, but the Arcade Fire do it so much better.

Image

This one pains me to put it on the list because i love joy division and new order. I love the lyrics and music, but it is a bit tuneless, no?

So there you go feel free to add to it, rip me apart, or rip each other's picks apart. But keep in mind i am a fan of all of these albums, i just think they aren't really the classics that people and time have made them out to be.

Pretty much every Radiohead album, with Kid A being at the top of the heap.

I disagree, I think Radiohead albums are ahead of their time and will stick around and be listened to and appreciated even more. Who knows, I could be wrong.

So let's pretend that I ignore the first sentence of that. The second sentence is even worse. That album most definitely did not influence rock as we know it. It had a small-medium influence on the indie rock scene, but more in the form of imitation groups. It was not nearly influencial as many other, lower quality, albums. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was not groundbreaking, but it was/is a creative masterpiece, a timeless album.

And the Arcade Fire. Um, it's totally different music. The Arcade Fire put out a phenomenal debut album, yes. But even that is not at the level of Neutral Milk Hotel's final piece. I actually think of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea as a concept album, because every track fits so perfectly together, yet there are like 6 songs that can be considered singles out of the 11. Funeral does neither, and I would only consider 3-4 songs tops to be single quality.

Image- I actually thought "College Dropout" was a classic but i cant get into "Late Registration". Its a little too much singing and not enough rapping. I read a article saying this might win the rap album of the year, pfffffffffffft.

Image- Pearl Jam November 6,2000.

For whatever it's worth, Rolling Stone named this the #1 album of the year. Like, overall. Over the White Stripes, the Rolling Stones, MMJ, Bright Eyes, Sufjan Steven, etc.

Personally, I can't get into it either.

I didn't say that they had no merit, wouldn't be appreciated, or that I don't like them, because I do. They're just the most overrated band out there. The shit storm that accompanies the release of a new album by them is enough to turn me off from it for at least a year. They're good, but highly overrated. Since this is supposed to be albums, I'll stick with the one, Kid A. Decent album, but certainly not the only one of it's kind, it has filler in between it's better moments and was a drop off from it's predeccesor.

Oh, and you can thank me now for turning this thread into a Radiohead argument.

I agree completely with Ten, Closer & Pretty Hate Machine.

I think I also agree with some Radiohead albums. I love them all, but the way the press hails them is just a tiny little over the top.

And I'd like to add:

AC/DC - Back in Black

It's a good album, but it's just nowhere near as good as any of the 70ies Bon Scott AC/DC albums.

I think part of the reason Back in Black gets so much credit is the circumstances under which it was recorded. Most bands would have called it quits after losing their singer, and few would re-emerge with an album that is at least arguably among their best.

That said, the Bon Scott stuff rocks too, and is often overlooked.
