One of the most important parts of a mix CD to me, is the bitrate. I never put MP3 quality songs on a mix CD for someone else. That is just so lazy. If you are going to make someone a mix CD, at least give them something that they can pop on with headphones and they will actually be able to hear the music you are trying to get across to them.
I rarely keep MP3 quality music on my computer, but even if I happen to have the song in MP3 that I am going to put on a mix CD, I still take the time to rip the song into WAV, to ensure the best quality mix.
What do you do when you are making mix CDs to make them as good as possible?
FYI - MP3 format audio is anywhere from 112kps (high compression, it actually gets worse but most programs don't let you compress it that much) to 384kps (lowest compression). That ranges from a 12:1 to a 4:1 compression ratio. WAV format audio is 1440kps. It is completely uncompressed. In fact, it is exactly what is off the CD, only in a format that computers can use.

i don't get it. i usually drop however many songs i can on a cd (15? 20?) and hand my friend the cd.

I try to keep the bitrate about 192, that's my only qualification as far as that goes. Other than that, something that they'll like, something they havent heard yet, something good.

To tell the truth, the real point of this thread was to express my disdain for mix CDs with low(mp3) quality. I just tried to disguise it in a post asking for others experiences so I didn't seem like such a snob. Sorry

The shows i sent you were randomly assembled from random sources and i flattened out the tracks to 64kbps to save space

Depends on the audience.
If I'm making a CD for someone to check out new artists, I'm using 128 kbps MP3's. I view this as a sampler. If they like it, they can go buy it (or download it, or whatever).
If I'm putting a mix together as a gift, or for myself, I'm ripping with EAC and burning WAV's at the slowest possible speed.

Well my secret is spontanenity. If I can make a mix CD in like two minutes, there usualy pretty dope. If I take too long and think too much about tracklisting, meaning, shit like that, they aren't as good for some reason.
But with tapes, some planning is essential beacuse of the time constraints of each side being about 45 minutes.

Wow. I'm sure we all missed the veiled snobbery in there.

flac just takes up too much space on my hard drive. 320 takes up about half the amount and I cannot honestly tell the difference.
