(shine at all) don't it make you smile? don't it make you smile? don't it make me smile? when the sun don't shine, it don't shine at all don't it make me smile? i miss you already... i miss you always i miss you already... i miss you all day this is how i feel... i miss you already... i miss you always three crooked hearts and swirls all around... i miss you all day

okay, just so you all know, these lyrics are based off a note written to the band that is posted above.
this is a top-five pearl jam song for me, and sometimes, it may be my favorite. it’s absolutely perfect. ed’s harmonica is beautiful, jeff rocks the guitar (chord progression for verses are Em/Am/Bm/Am, chorus is G/C/D) and stone rocks the bass. just gorgeous music and the band just having such good chemistry at this point makes it better.
i think this song is a prime example of how much neil young rubbed off on pearl jam. it’s really raw and has that neil young sound that makes you think it was recorded in a garage.
i love everything about this studio recording, down to ed even singing 'three crooked hearts...' as the music fades. i wish they played this more often live – it seemed to hit its peak in 2000.

it was my favorite on no code when i first heard the album, and it still is. its in my top 5 pj songs as well, and in my opinion one of the best songs they have ever recorded.
great pick, c_b

Good choice c_b, good to see you're keeping the fire burning while Stip's away. Easily a favourite of mine, even on No Code, where it's up against some pretty stiff competition.
I've no real stories or anything about this one, it's just a really, really good song, watching the video on Touring Band is excellent fun, and it does indeed make me smile.

To me it's just an OK song... There's nothing special on it, musically nor lyrically. The video on TB2K is pretty nice, though.
yep, there are better songs on no code
lyrically, i'm don't know there are any songs that overcome it on no code. in my tree, sometimes, and hail hail are up there in that echelon, but this is a very strong song.
the lyrics are so good. and so true. when the sun don't shine at all, don't it make you smile?
i think the lyrics can reflect on missing a loved one that is away from you, and how you feel about it.
regardless of meaning, this song has gotten me through many a tough time. and it's the best pearl jam bar song, bar none.

I love this song. Unfortunately it is on my very short list of songs I haven't seen live yet. Along with oceans. Wtf... d
i've seen them like 11 times or something now, and i haven't seen it either. it's really the last song on my list of songs to see live, i think. one of the last, at least.

For sure. Out of 27 shows I haven't seen WMA not as a tag, All Those Yesterdays, Oceans and Smile. I think Oceans is the most surprising. There's 52 songs I've seen 3 or less times out of the 27 too. I can't wait for the next tour!
