have listened to this about 3-4 times and first impressions are that the lower half seems rather weak as opposed to the upper which seems to be pretty good... i'll definitely keep listening...

I'm disappointed as well. The last album didn't really excite me like the old records did, either. It was fun, and I like a number of songs on it, but the overall feel and consistency is just meh.

Get your shit together, B&S! You used to be fucking incredible!

I think it's pretty damn good, actually. HOWEVER, I think anyone who is interested in Belle & Sebastian should just cope with the fact that they're not the same band anymore. They'll most likely never write another "Lazy Line Painter Jane" or "Sleep The Clock Around." They're just a straight up pop band now, and pretty damn good one at that.

I do agree however, that their post Dear Catastrophe Waitress material doesn't even sniff the greatness of their earlier stuff, but that doesn't mean it can't be good in it's own right.

Usually fans get upset with bands for not progressing with their sound. In belle & Sebastian's case, it's the complete opposite; fans get upset that they did change.

I dunno, the Books EP was brilliant. They still have it, but not on this album.

Fold Your Hands Child was a good record too. I really like that one. Dear Catastrophe Waitress didn't get me too excited, and aged even worse.

I notice your avatar is Yo La Tengo's Summer Sun. How is that album compared to their other stuff?

If You're Feeling Sinister is by far their best album.

I haven't heard all of their albums but I got Summer Sun and fell in love with it almost immediatly. It's really relaxed and most of the songs are very smooth. Some people say it's boring or that it's one of their worst releases but I really like it a lot, specially if you're hearing it with some good headphones. You should check it out.

Sorry about the off topic.
