To preface this, I recently took my ipod into the apple store in my local mall and they found nothing wrong with it when they ran their 16-hour battery test, so there's that...

I have a new video ipod and the battery lasts an hour, maybe two... is this normal? I thought it was supposed to last 6-8 hours or something like that. Am I not turning it off right? I press and hold the 'play' button to turn it off and the screen flashes off everytime, so I don't think it's that.

What are the possibilities here?

Do you have the backlight on at all times? That will drain the battery more quickly.

If you're watching videos, you'll only get about 2 hours out of the battery.

The basic problem is that the folks at Apple are complete liars. I've never once gotten 6-8 hours out of my battery (I just got a 30gb video too), and 10-12 is unheard of. But it sounds bad to advertise that your mp3 player only gets a few hours of battery time.

The good news is that you can stretch it out beyond 2-3 hours if you're just listening to music. Just turn the backlight setting to 2 seconds (or no backlight if you don't need it), and you should get some more time. The majority of the energy seems to be drained by the backlight, so you'll have quite a bit more audio playback. But yeah, videos drain it really quickly.

If your battery is that bad, then why don't you return it? Apple will replace it under warranty if the battery is bad. I've got a 3rd gen iPod that was orignally rated for 8 hours. It's over 2 years old and I still get better than 7 hours, though that's w/o the backlight.

I've got about 6 months left on my replacement plan for my 30G Video iPod. It hasn't been bothering me, but I was thinking that I kinda like the new nanos.

Of course, it's not a "no questions asked" replacement plan, and I'm a reasonably honest person, so ... how much battery life should I expect to be getting out of my iPod? I haven't tested it, but I'm guessing I get 6-8 hours. Would that justify taking it in and saying that the battery is going to shit?

Also, what's the best way to test it? Just turn it on shuffle and check it every hour?

I agree. When it comes to consumer shopping, I get down to business. The DJ was a candidate for my mp3 player (as well as the Nomad Zen), but neither could hold a candle to the innovation, ease of use, and overall convenience of the iPod.
