I made a post on this last year at some point, but it recieved so few replies that I think it deserves another. This is easily one of my favorite films (top 5 anyway), and is probably one of the best films ever made by Werner Herzog, one of the best directors, ever. Also, Klaus Kinski, one of the best actors ever, gives one of the best performances, ever. So as you can see, it has a lot going for it. Aguirre takes place in 16th century South America, after the Spanish conquered the Incan Empire. An expedition is sent to search for the legendary El Dorado, but things become apparent from the first 30 seconds that the people involved are ultimately doomed. Its an excellent comment on hysteria, greed, corruption, and power regardless of whether Herzog got some of the "facts" right. Every scene is terrifically memorable, and it contains some of the best shots in cinematic history, namely the opening mountain scene. There's also plenty of dark humor to be found under the film's cynicism, as well as a couple poignant moments between Aguirre and his daughter (one of my favorites in particular). And the soundtrack will leave you seriously disturbed. 12/10, 6 stars, A++.

I'd really like to see this one. Or any Herzog, for that matter.

"A film which haunts you"

Geez, you'd think they could have at least found a review quote that's written properly.

Popul Vuh, the band responsible for the soundtrack, was an excellent but overlooked krautrock band. They did the music for a few other Herzog movies.

Is the 3-star rating from the Video Movie Guide supposed to impress me? I've never seen the film and I'm not saying it's bad, but that is pretty lame.

I've seen it and was impressed.

It is one of those pieces for males into "important" movies.

Kinski is an amazing weird brilliant actor. His acting in that movie is awesome, the only thing that's even better is the material of the making of of that film. His argument with the cook is film history

Just watched it (with original voices and translation). Wow. Are the subtitles pretty accurate?

Odd that this was bumped just now. I just watched this movie a few days ago. It was very unique. At times the fact that it's a film is very present and right in your face, and at other times it feels like a documentary. Good movie.
