Rats

They don't eat, don't sleep
They don't feed, they don't seethe
Bare their gums when they moan and squeak
Lick the dirt off a larger one's feet
They don't push, don't crowd
Congregate until they're much too loud
Fuck to procreate till they are dead
Drink the blood of their so called best friend

They don't scurry when something bigger comes their way
Don't pack themselves together and run as one
Don't shit where they're not supposed to
Don't take what's not theirs
They don't compare

They don't scam, don't fight
Don't oppress an equals given rights
Starve the poor so they can be well fed
Line their holes with the dead ones bread

They don't scurry when something bigger comes their way
Don't pack themselves together and run as one
Don't shit where they're not supposed to
Don't take what's not theirs
They don't compare...

They don't scurry when something bigger comes their way
Don't pack themselves together and run as one
Don't shit where they're not supposed to
Don't take what's not theirs

They don't compare...
Rats...
They don't compare

Ben, the two of us need look no more...[/i][/b]

Rats has grown on me over the years, but it wasn't one of my favorites when Vs. first came out.

I love the music--some of the most interesting stuff they had done up to that point and I wouldn't mind seeing a similar song somewhere down the line. A nice piece for Jeff and one of their first songs with a lot of swirly effects in them.

The lyrics are pretty good, but a bit over the top. A nice idea behind the song. I always wondered if the song would be more effective if it wasn't called Rats, as that gives the punchline away a little bit.

There is also some nice anticipation of some themes that would show up later in Do The Evolution--that in the end humanity, for all its high and mighty opinion of itself, is not much different from the lowliest animal.

I'd give rats a 7.5 or 8 out of ten.

I'd rather have leash but rats would be a close second.

This song is the type of song Dave A was made to play.

Funky as FUCK!

Yes, absolutely.

I LOVE this song, and I don't think there's any song that would give me a bigger stiffy to see played live. This just has the baddest groove, and it just makes me want to do the Snoop Bounce every time I hear it. I can just imagine a whole crowd bouncing up and down on the floor to the opening bass line, like a bunch of rodents.

With all the talk about how angry and disenchanted an album Vitalogy is, some of PJ's most dissillusioned songs came from Vs (Rats, Blood, Animal, W.M.A.), as well as their funkiest.

I don't remember which performance of Rats GH used on his comp, but my favorite is from New Orleans in 93 (11-17-93?) with the long "Ben" tag. It was the first PJ boot I ever had.

Awesome tune. I don't listen to this song as often as most because it isn't on any of the official boots, but once in a while I'll give VS a spin, since there's a few gems on there they don't play.

I love these lyrics, very clever. I also love Jeff's bass in this song, freakin awesome.

I don't really understand why they don't play this one in concert. If it's just because they don't want to, that's fine. We get plenty of great tunes at shows. But I don't see this as another Leash, with outdated lyrics.

Great song.

Great song.

Honestly, I think they've just forgotten how to play it, and they don't feel like pulling a "Satan's Bed" again and completely fucking it up. The last performance, in Florida in 98, was a bit sub-standard.

As a younger lad, I always thought the line "lick the dirt off a larger one's feet" was actually "lick the dirt off Olajuwon's feet"

Best thing about this song, other than the music of course, is that Dave A. was all over the Rats logo (shirts, stickers on his kit, etc)

It's not up to Even Flow's level though.

I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG.

the performance from atlanta 94 is unreal. i'd rather hear this than any other song live. in fact, i think if they came out and played this and took off, i'd be happy.

i think vitalogy has some of pearl jam's best music, and this is one example.
