Never was there a game played under more ridiculous circumstances. -15 degrees with a 20 mph wind makes for some sweet football.

"I remember the first play of the game vividly. The referee blew his whistle and it froze on his lip. He pulled part of his lip off and the blood froze down his chin. We were basically playing on solid concrete with shards of glass sticking out of it."

When men were men! How sweet would it be to see something like this today?

I wasn't alive for the ice bowl but one of my first football memories is watching San Diego at Cinci for the AFC Championship game in 1981(might have been 82') . The wind chill was like minus 40 and the Chargers were struggling the whole game. They just won the previous week againts Miami in one of the greatest games ever and the bitter cold in Cinci along with their faitgue really sunk them. The Ice Bowl is shown all the time on espn classic. Great game, so much respect for those guys. Yet another reason why i feel football is the best and toughest sport

I thought about saying that. Not to mention, I love football but rugby players are freakin' insane.

I've always thought the rugby-football comparison was unfair. Football players use pads and helmets as projectiles, and it allows them to hit much, much harder than they would otherwise be able to.

I used to think rugby was much tougher than football until I actually watched a rugby match.

I definitely think it is blown out of proportion. Also factor in how many rugby guys you see who are like 5'8, 160. Imagine if they slammed into an NFL offensive lineman. I'm just saying rugby players have a crazy mindset that makes their game insane.

A cold weather Super Bowl would kick ass.

The Fog Bowl Bears vs. Eagles in the late 80s or early 90s was good.

If ever a game should have been postponed due to weather conditions, it was that one. :?

I was 10 years old and that was the first Eagles playoff game I ever watched. I never heard my father curse more in a 3-hour period than I did during that game.

not this debate again :D

Of course it's arguable that hockey contains togher players but hockey doesn't throw in weather intangibles into the mix. Playing in rain, cold, snow, wind, it makes the football argument seem that much better.

"Because of the conditions that day, Don Meredith did not recover from the pneumonia he had contracted until February. Five Cowboys - Georgie Andrie, Jethro Pugh, Mel Renfro, Willie Townes and Dick Daniels - were treated for severe frostbite, and Don Perkins, Frank Clarke and Bob Lilly to this day still have cold-weather-related conditions that prevent them from being exposed to the harsh elements for extended periods of time."
