This is my small collection of movies(As I've just started recently). Examining this list, what other movies might I enjoy buying? I just have a hard time finding new movies to see without hearing from other people with similar tastes.

I don't have too many as you can see but this is a pretty good depiction of my preferences for humour, mystery etc. This may help other people as well for some good ideas in this range of styles.

Also, I've been looking into seeing "The City of Lost Children" but the local HMV says they can only order it for me. Great! All I have to do is pay 50 bucks! God damn imported movies :S

You seem to like Cronenburg. He's a very consistant director, so you should be pretty safe in choosing anything by him, but if I had to choose just a few, I'd pick Videodrome, Dead Ringers, The Brood, and The Dead Zone

Best movie of last year, IMO. Chan Wook Park is another very consistant director, albeit with a much shorter resume. Oldboy is part of his revenge trilogy, the order of which goes: Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. JSA is the only other movie he's done so far, and it's a great mystery/thriller, but very different in tone from the others.

Kubrick is excellent in general. My favorites of his are Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, and Barry Lyndon.

Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino, followed by PF, then Reservior Dogs, then both Kill Bills. They're all great, though.

Hated Fight Club. But, David Fincher, the director, did Seven, which I like.

The Coens have made some of my favorite movies. I'd go for Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski and Raising Arizona.


Fantastic movie. Stephen Chow also did Shaolin Soccer and many, many other Chinese comedies.

You might want to check out Micheal Gondry's music video compilation. Also, Charlie Kaufman, the co-writer, did Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, both of which are great.

Thanks for the tips on alot of those movies. I've seen most of them, I just need to actually buy them. Jackie Brown I was wondering about though, so I may try and pick that up too. The Cronenburg ones I've read into, but they aren't readily available in town. I know there's the internet but i'm not huge on that. The Oldboy type films aren't accessible at all either, and if they are they normally cost a fortune(I was lucky on OldBoy). I just saw Barton Fink actually, which I enjoyed alot. I was looking into the other Coens movies, namely Millers Crossing. Finally, I absolutely love Kaufman's movies. Adaptation was wonderful, Being John is one of my favourites too. I saw Human Nature as well which was strangely funny. The plot was a little out there, and the people I watched it with didn't really stay too attent. I love it's unique style. Confessions of a Dangereous Mind was pretty decent as well, although I think Cloony directed it?

I just watched Lock Stock last night actually, and I quite enjoyed the interwinding plots.

Finally, I've just recently been interested in Capote, and Everything is Illuminated which I'm really looking forward to see, especially the latter. How were these two movies? Also, how is "The Thing". I've been wanting to see that for awhile but haven't watched it yet.

First of all, The Thing is very good film.

And yes, watch every one of the Coen. Bros' films, as they are all great in my opinion (except for The Ladykillers).

barry lyndon is a great film as mentioned before you cant go wrong with kubrick as seen in clockwork and full metal jack...but i suggest to you possibily memento which is phenomenal and requiem for a dream which will is shot very well

No, no it's not.

It actually kind of is. It's not a travesty at the level of, say, Ken Park, but it's still pretty overrated and reliant on the shock of kids doing behaving badly. Which is to say no real shock at all, unless you're a 55 year old white woman.

Chloe Sevigny can't catch a break. First, she has to get raped in KIDS to get noticed, then she sucks a dick in Brown Bunny. Poor girl.

I'd put it in the same league as Requeim for a dream, and I prefer it over that one. The main thing it has going for it is how realistic it is.

I'd put it in the same league as Requim too: shit. Two alarmist movies made by people who don't have a clue about their subject matter.

Kids: Young teens fuck and get high, and in the end everyone has AIDS!

Requeim: Older people do drugs, and in no time flat are having their arms sawed off and fucking fat old businessmen.

I don't think Kids is terrible, but its nowhere near the same league as Requiem. Both have a certain element of shock value, but Requiem is just 100 times better in every aspect imaginable. The direction, the acting, the script, the production design...what do you see in Kids that makes you think its superior?
