I saw this in the NHL thread but this deserves it's own thread. From JimNasiums's post:

Lemieux is going to announce he's retiring today

One of the greatest NHL players in history is calling it a career.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have called a 2pm et press conference where Mario Lemieux will announce his retirement.

Lemieux has been out of the lineup for over a month with an irregular heartbeat diagnosed as atrial fibrillation.

Lemieux first retired in 1997 following years of back pain, a rare bone infection and a bout with cancer, but unexpectedly came out of retirement five years.

He did not play a full, injury-free season upon his return, missing most of two seasons with hip problems and another full season when the NHL shut down last year.

He recorded seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 26 games this season with the disappointing Penguins.

More details to follow.

It's a sad day for hockey.

Even strength, power play goal, shorthanded goal, penalty shot, and empty net.

He's definitely my favorite for sure, but of the players I grew up watching I think Gretzky was still better. However, if Lemieux remained healthy throughout his career I think he could have score more points than Gretzky. They both averaged almost 2 points per game, and Lemieux was at or above 2 points per game up until his injury problems over the past few years.

Him scoring five different ways is the most amazing sports feat in history. There is no way that will ever happen again. I think Gretzky was better, but a case can be made for Lemieux.

The what if aspect of his career will always be more intriguing then the insane stats Gretzky has put up.

I don't know if I'd go that far.

they did this on Sportscenter, marios feat, jamal lewis rushing for 295, sayers rushing for 6 TDs on 14 posessions, david duval shooting a 59, all brought on by kobes 81

all are very impressive in their own right

anything involving an empty net goal isn't really that amazing.

Let me re-phrase: adding the empty net goal onto the other 4 goals is silly. It's like saying a batter hit for the cycle, and managed to reach on an error as well. The first four are obviously impressive.

I think Orr is the best ever, but Mario might be the most talented player to ever play the game.

The Orr/Gretzky/Lemieux argument could go on forever, it's just a shame Orr and Lemieux are full of "what if"s.
