Cool. That can't be CG, but then again, that seems like it would be an almighty pain-in-the-ass to film.

I guess this clears it up:

Bouncy Balls: The BRAVIA Commercial

When you're introducing the next generation of television, you want to make an impact - but that doesn't mean you have to shout at the top of your voice. And it doesn't mean you have to be predictable. To announce the arrival of the BRAVIA LCD and 3LCD range, we wanted to get across a simple message - that the colour you'll see on these screens will be 'like no other'.

Sending 250,000 multi-coloured 'superballs' bouncing down the streets of San Francisco may seem the strangest way to do this, but that's exactly what Danish director Nicolai Fuglsig did for the BRAVIA commercial in July this year. San Franciscans have seen some unusual things in their time, but even this gave them something to talk about. And we've got the feeling that this commercial is going to do exactly the same thing.
Music from the Sony BRAVIA ad

The beautiful track that sets the mood for the commercial is 'Heartbeats', performed by José González from his critically-acclaimed debut Album, 'Veneer'.

We met José during his recent UK tour. Watch this 3 minute special on 'Heartbeats' with an interviewabout José's musical roots and what he thinks about the BRAVIA ad.

Wow, i was certain that it was mostly CG when i watched it. I figured some of the closer shots and the shots where the balls where not moving very fast would be done with real balls.
It really wouldn't be that hard to do. I took computer animation in school and did a couple projects very similar to this (only not on such a grand scale). All you need to do is program gravity and an inertia on each ball (you could do it for multiple balls just as easily as one) and give them something to bounce off of (you would use invisible blocks or models of cars or whatever happened to be in the scene) and you would just superimpose the bouncing balls over the footage of the street scene. This is actually one of the most elementary concepts in computer animation. Animating a realistically walking human however is damn near impossible :x .

Very neat commercial though.

The roar of the balls coming down the hill is awesome. It would probably sting, but watching that commercial makes me want to run through all those balls.

I keep watching that commercial over and over again. The way the imagery works with the music is awesome. It's not very often that a commercial crosses the line to art but I would say that this one has.

Let the record show that B has, on at least one occasion, expressed a desire to "run through" a copious amount of balls in San Francisco.
