I am pretty happy with where Texas ended up. But I mostly just wanted to ask this question:

Why the hell does everyone want to go play for USC? What started this lame trend?

I would much rather go play for a classy team like Michigan, Auburn, OSU, Tenn, LSU, Georgia, Miami, Alabama, Arkansas, Nebraska, etc. Florida State and Florida both seem like huge bandwagon schools as well, meaning it seems like everyone wants to go there for some wierd reason.

I am probably just totally biased, but oh well.

Let's see, why would anyone play for USC? National powerhouse, great location, hot girls. Why would anyone want to pass that up?

And I can't believe you just used Miami and classy in the same sentence, unless you are talking about Miami of Ohio.

You, as a legitimate NFL-prospect, would rather play for Lloyd Carr than Pete Carroll?

I would rather play for either of them than USC. I hate the entire...everything...associated with that school. The attitude, the aura, the people, the state, the conference. Bleh.

if I was a big time college football recruit who could go anywhere, USC would be in my top 2-3 choices.

Why, aside from them winning two National Championships in a row and almost 3? Any other reason?

off the top of my head:

-history of sending players to NFL
-no NFL team in LA means increased media coverage
-play in pro-style offense
-player friendly coach
-awesome weather
-some people prefer living in a large metropolitan area
-oh...and the girls

Signing day is so overrated in my book. A lot of these players never pan out or get hurt and you never see them again. The recruit team rankings just give fans something to talk about during the offseason.

I agree, I especially hate high school kids having press conferences to announce where they are going...plus the way they act is usually an embarrasment.

I go to USC. Here are just a few reasons why someone would want to go here.

1) USC is in the top tier of major universities in the United States. It is a major research university, has the best cinema school in the nation, has excellent business, theater, and communications programs, and is has equal emphasis on both graduate and undergraduate education. And before you say "we're talking about football," only a very very small percentage of players make it to the NFL, so the education that a unviersity provides is a very important education.

2) The weather is gorgeous. Anyone who hasn't been or doesn't live in a similar area will understand just how nice it is.

3) The girls are beautiful.

4) Of all out of state students, more come from Texas than anywhere else.

5) You can see more concerts, movies, and other great events than almost anywhere else.

6) The football program is a fucking juggernaut, with the aformentioned pro-style offense and excellent coaching, resources, and community support, as well as one of the best rivalries in all of college sports.

That's why people want to come to USC.

I'm sorry but that list is so assanine that it barely deserves a response. #'s 1-3 and 5 have to be a joke right? #2 I hope is well down the list of reasons to go to a school. #4 - tons of colleges have hot girls. #6 is the only valid reason, the rest of that is ridiculous.

How is any of that asinine at all? Those are reasons people go to the school. Hell, I went there for those reasons.

I hate to disagree here, but those are not the reasons high school players about whom we're speaking on signing day go to particular schools. They go to particular schools to win and to be recognized on the football field. I don't think Reggie Bush considered USC's cinema program while making his decision.

Not everybody who signs a letter of decision is going to the NFL. Academic status of a school and prestige is certainly important to these kids as well. Besides academics was only one reason, and I got it out of the way because I knew everyone would disagree. You're telling me that weather, girls, and shit to do aren't important considerations for football players?

Also, I was telling Buffalohed why anyone, not just football players, would go to the school. But I think football players certainly consider these things as well. They're not automatons who do nothing but play football.

But the players getting the press on signing day are choosing a school based on how well they think that team will help them to get to the NFL. They may not make it, but they sure as hell believe they will. They don't give a rat's ass about anything except who will help them reach the pros.

Exactly. And if those schools include the ones listed in the first post, those high school players don't have acting on their minds . . .

Yes, but if two schools have equally prestigious programs, other factors are going to come in to play. Football players are human and they like perks just like the rest of us. That's all I'm saying.
