I'm getting one for christmas and I was wondering if any has any advice about how many pixels to go for? If I get 3.2 am I going to end up regretting it or is that just fine?

Totally depends on what you want to do. If you just want a point and shoot for some simple memories, 3 megapx will be fine. If you want to do more, then you will want more of a camera.

Here is a good website to check out:

3.2 should be fine, but look for a good optical (not digital) zoom. They should have both optical and digital but optical is actual zoom, digital is just enlarging the image.

Another thing to consider would be if you plan to print out these photos.

3 Megapixels gives just enough quality to make a 4x6 look decent. Anything bigger, and a greater megapixel quality is needed.

Personally, I just purchased the Sony DSC-W1. You can check it out here. I love it. It takes wonderfully clear pics and has a feature set of everything I wanted in a digicam.

i've had a 2.1 megapixel camera (canon powershot a20) for a couple years now and it is beyonda adaquate for my needs. I'm not doing anything that requires very high res, nor am i manipulating pictures or printing them out.

Don't listen to people who say "don't buy a kodak". We make very high quality cameras and the prices are competitive. We didn't get to be number one in US digital camera sales by making crap. Personally I recommend the DX6490 or DX7590. Both have 10x optical zoom , the first is 4MP the second is 5MP. Mine is 4MP and it works perfectly. I just bought the g/f a 3.1 MP and she is very satisfied with the picture quality.

The problem with most of the Kodak's is that in almost any comparable class of cameras, either Nikon, Olympus or Canon make better ones for comparable prices.

the 6490 has issues with stabalization at full zoom.

6490:

From power-on till the first image was captured measured 6 seconds. Shutter lag, the delay between depressing the shutter and capturing the image, was a very respectable 2/10 second when pre-focused, but a disappointing one second including autofocus time. Shot-to-shot delay averaged about two seconds, while burst mode captured six shots in two seconds; both of these rapid shooting modes caused the viewfinder (LCD or EVF) to blank during image capture, preventing the photographer from following action while shooting and therefore limiting the effectiveness of the DX6490 in rapidly capturing a series of images.

crap.

Sounds to me like a defective camera since people at autocross events use the 6490 constantly and it's not the easiest thing to follow a car with the camera if it's going to have issues like the one you mention. Who's the source of the review too?

It really depends upon what you plan to do with the images, and what type of images you plan to take.

Restated, ask yourself if you will be:

- primarily taking pictures of people at a close range
- primarily taking pictures of out door events at a distance
- primarily publishing digital images to the web without any modifications
- primarily publishing digital images to a color printer
- primarily planning to alter most images using software (Photoshop)

If you know what the output is going to be, you can decided what will be best.

Personally, I just purchased a Canon A60. I don't take very many digital images and the few I do take are usually indoors and at close range, usually of an inanimate object (not people, no "red eye" nor flesh tone concerns, but lighing is always an issue), and are usually only "cropped" and resized (made smaller), and published to the web (not printed).

Whatever you buy, make sure its from a CAMERA manufacturer (Canon, Minolta, Olympus, etc.) and not a computer company (Intel, HP, etc.)

I also do NOT recommend getting a Kodak digital camera.

well, have you tried it? Seriously, I'm thrilled with my kodak camera. I bought my g'f one for her b-day last month and she loves hers. I helped a friend buy one over the summer and he took some great pics of us autocrossing over the summer.

Hey, easy kids, those who are enjoying their Kodak digital cameras - great for you, glad to hear it. My experience and those of people I know simply differed. No need to get offended, its not like you built the things....
