I'm using Comcast Rhapsody right now and listening to some classic rock. There are some great bands here, like Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Heart, Hendrix, Clapton, etc.

But I've also found myself really NOT liking a lot of the more highly regarded classic rock artists such as Dylan, the Rolling Stones, many Doors songs, a lot of Who songs, Allman Brothers, Iggy Pop, etc.

I also recently saw the VH1 "Top 100 Hard Rock Artists" countdown, and I was largely unimpressed with a lot of their Top 20 (The Clash, Iggy Pop, Black Sabbath, etc.) What is it about these bands that make them so "great" ?

Classic rock for me is like anything else, I like some of it and dislike some of it. I've never really gotten into a lot of the "classic" bands.

generally im a huge fan of classic rock. i agree it can be hit or miss, but i find myself enjoying most of it.

but personally, there's no classic rock band that could compare with some newer bands like pearl jam and radiohead. i guess its b/c im younger i adore these bands more b/c i grew up with them.

Kinda the same idea where people group U2 & REM into the same category w/ PJ....I love PJ, don't care for the other two.

Never been a huge fan of Dylan or Iggy pop. I absolutely love The Doors. The Stones, Allman Bros and The Who were all great, imo, but I don't really listen to them.

Once in a while I'll listen to the classic rock station around here. Plenty of great stuff being played on a daily basis. They play said bands, plus CCR, AC/DC, and the other notables with a little 90s rock mixed in.

classic rock is pretty much a radio-invented moniker so they could capture the market of people who liked to listen to the songs from their youth. It sounds a little more modern than "oldies," and more appealing all around.

Just my 2 cents. I like quite a bit of it, that is for sure.

For the record, Pink Floyd is the best classic rock band.

i would say influence has alot to do with it also. for the most part, alot of the bands i like today pretty much owe their career to some older bands i like.

with that said, i think eddie vedder is the best lyricist ever. better than dylan, better than bruce, better than everyone.

I think you're not too far off here, and that also answers the question of why Iggy Pop is considered "Classic Rock" on that station. Simply because he's of that age, even though nobody was listening to The Stooges back then, or The Ramones, or the Velvet Underground, or the MC5, or any of 100 other bands that gained fame and prominence much later by who the influenced in the 80's and 90's.

When I think "Classic Rock", I think of the 60's and 70's AOR music, and its direct descendants, that were played on "Rock Radio" in the 70's and 80's, before the "alternative" movement became mainstream. The "borderline bands" of classic rock are those which are often classified as such, but are often classified under newer genres as well, such as U2, REM, The Police, Van Halen, basically any of the rock and roll based groups that emerged from the late 70's/early 80's post disco period that seemed more akin to the rock of the 70's than to the disco or punk movements. Classic rock has co-opted much of classic punk as its own these days, even though it was the ultimate reaction to the 70's rock scene.

What's so great about the Clash?

The clash have never done much for me. I can see their historical importance but the band itself--meh.


I lump U2 and REM in with Pearl Jam. Ten, Vs., Out of Time, Automatic for the people, and Achtung baby were all released within 3 year of each other and were targeted at the same people and addressed similar themes of alienation.

Been listening to a bunch of classic rock lately. Ya know...the type of artists they play on the radio all the time. It's a shame that the local station sucks so bad because many of the people they advertise have shitloads of good songs and albums. I've only recently come to realize the beauty of Aerosmith's early work and something along the lines of Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak. "We are Not Helpless" from Stephen Stills' self-titled has been in heavy rotation as of late.
