Title says it all. While I love Commando, Bloodsport, etc, I wouldn't call them good movies in a million years. So: name some 80's action films which are actually good, in terms of plot, acting, direction, etc. I'll start:

First Blood
Terminator
Robocop
Predator
Aliens

Good call. I can't believe I forgot that one. And let's not forget The Road Warrior, which has some of the greatest action sequences to come out of the 80's.

I wouldn't quite call these action movies.

I agree. Platoon as well. Somehow "war movies" are their own separate genre.

One I liked a lot was Shoot To Kill.

Not really an action movie, but someone mentioned John Carpenter so I have to say The Thing with Kurt Russell is great.

It's one of my favorite movies, but it's definitely not an action movie.

Yeah. And Kirstie Alley and Clancy Brown.

the untouchables - Yeah, I guess that's action, though more "drama" in my book.
superman trilogy - Not really.
rocky trilogy - Drama, sports drama.
akira - I don't think anime can be "action". There must be stunts in an action movie.
conan the barbarian - Close. Action fantasy, but close enough.
over the top - Again, sports drama. Or "crap" would be an acceptable answer.

....

Uh...I think you have a warped idea of what makes an action movie... :?
