I finally got around to buying this movie (found it for 4 bucks). It's one of 2 movies from the late 90's I really liked that seemed to disappear off the face of the earth shortly after they came out (Dark City being the other one). For those who haven't seen it, Matthew Broderick (stay with me, he's good in this) is a teacher who develops an extremely adversarial relationship with a very (psychotically) driven overacheiver (Reese Witherspoon), who is running unopposed in the Class President race. He talks a good natured but incredibly stupid sidelined football star (Chris Klein, also suprisingly good, although his job isn't hard) into running against her. There is much more to the movie, obviously, but that's the story in a nutshell.

It flopped when it came out, mostly because of horribly misleading advertising. It was portrayed as a high school comedy in the vein of American Pie, when in reality it's an extremely dark comedy by Alexander Paine, the man behind Sideways, Citizen Ruth, and About Schmidt. What makes the fact that it doesn't suck even more of a miracle is that it's an MTV film.

Anyway, if anyone sees this in the budget bin at Best Buy or somewhere, don't hesitate to pick it up. It really is a great movie.

I haven't watched this in years but I really should rent it again. When I first saw it I took a sip of water when the teacher made the comment about the student's pussy and I ended up spitting the water out all over the place.

Yeah, the movie takes a fairly abrupt turn at that point.

The stills of Reese Witherspoon's obnoxious face on this are priceless.

Murderball and Hustle and Flow were both pretty good, I thought.

Of course, this doesn't cover for Varsity Blues, Crossroads, Jackass: The Movie, The Perfect Score, The Longest Yard, and Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

The greatest part is when he first decides to run and she staring at him out of the school bus and that crazy African music comes on.

Jim McAllister: Paul, what is your favorite fruit?
Paul Metzler: Pears.
Jim McAllister: Okay, now...
Paul Metzler: No wait! Apples.
Jim McAllister: Great, now say that everyday you had an apple. An apple, an apple and more apples. You probably thought that apples were pretty good, even if you got a rotten one every once in awhile. Then one day there was an orange. Now you can choose, do you want an apple or do you want an orange? That's democracy.
Paul Metzler: I also like bananas.

I was about to post this. That line is delivered in such a cheesy way that it makes you laugh extra hard.

I love this movie. I saw it in the theater when it came out, which was actually pretty hard to do, only one place around here even had it. Watched my old VHS copy of it again recently as I hadn't seen it in forever. Easily my favorite Reese Witherspoon performance.

Great movie. Paine uses a lot of subtle imagery, the comedy is just dark enough with being too heavy and the character arcs are all resolved nicely.

A very well crafted film, all in all. Plus the music is great - and the shot of Broderick and his teacher friend jamming is priceless.
