Daydream Nation. Boring choice, but obvious for me.

I have only heard Dirty and Murray Street and Dirty is better as a whole, Murray Street is too short, although still good
I should be getting Daydream Nation for Xmas, I am quite new to Sonic youth

a thousand leaves is pretty much the same length as daydream nation, but is sonic with with about 10 more years under thier belt. bands either grow or decay in 10 years time, but sonic youth has made a career out of making abstract music, and i believe a thousand leaves shows them taking the whole epic song jam thing and turning it into pure beauty. daydream is a good starting place, but i think a thousand leaves is where you will find all of sonic youth's best free form songs. and, since i personally think they are better when they are truly experimenting than when they are trying to be no wave punks, a thousand leaves is what i consider thier best album.

you should really check it out. and check out the link i posted, too ;)

A Thousand Leaves isn't an album that someone unfamiliar w/ the band should start with. Daydream Nation or Dirty would be best.

My fave is probably Dirty.

are you going strictly by accesibility? i mentioned in my post where to start (daydream), but if we are talking about the best albums here, i'll stand proudly by a thousand leaves.

Sonic Nurse. Best album of the year. I might be a little biased because I've seen them live on the Sonic Nurse tour, but I listen to SN more than I have any of the others, including Daydream Nation.

Its amazing that a band can issue some of its best material, like Murray Street and Sonic Nurse after so many years.

I've heard Daydream Nation, Washing Machine, NYC G&F, Murray Street, and Sonic Nurse. I would go with Sonic Nurse. Not a bad song on there.

Are you high? Its hard to imagine that someone could find DN inconsistent.
