Do I count the car I drive for work as one of my vehicles? I mean, I have no commute to work, but my job requires me to drive around.

Yeah, you should include it. It still counts as a carbon emission.

Yeah, but should it be MY footprint? If I didn't do the job, the state would still hire someone to do the job. The fact that I do the job (vs. someone else) has a zero net effect on the environment.

I still think you have to count it since you are actually doing it. The same could be said for things like what foods you eat (packaged vs locally grown)- if you didn't buy the food, someone else would. Or air travel- if you weren't sitting in the seat, someone else would be!
The footprint calculator doesn't distinguish between what you are forced to do and what you choose to do - it takes into account what you do do!

I think they need to take into account the source of electric power. My house is all eletric (it backs to a golf course so I have no access to gas), but some of that comes from nuclear power, some from coal, some from oil, and some from gas. It's a very good idea to show people how much damage their lifestyle is doing to our environment, but it should be customized by state/province for power source details, like %coal, %nuke, etc.

Of course this is just a rough estimate. To be exact, you would need to know the details you mentioned above, as well as the properties of the walls and windows of your house to determine heat transfer details. Then the information about how much energy you use would have to be normalized against weather data... the list goes on and on. It's not supposed to be an exact calculation - just enough to give people a rough idea of the amount of resources they require to sustain their lifestyle.

That's not the same thing. The farmers produce food and the airlines schedule flights based on demand. If less people fly or buy a particular type of food, those business cut back on production.

If I quit my job, the state would still be mandated by law to conduct audits of healthcare facilities, and would seek someone out to do it.
