It's a whole new spin on show and tell.
Philadelphia Police want to know how a seven-year-old child in Southwest Philadelphia's Patterson School at 70th and Buist Street got a hold of packets of crack cocaine.
Police Public Affairs Officer Captain Benjamin Naish says how the child got the drugs is still a mystery, but officials certainly know what happened once she got to school:
"She came to school with a backpack, and inside of the backpack was a quantity of drugs. It appears that there were 18 packets of crack, or cocaine. And the teacher eventually found that the student was passing the stuff around. She immediately took it from the children, and contacted school police, and that's how we got involved."
Philadelphia School District Spokesman Vincent Thompson:
"We're outraged that some parent or guardian of a second-grade student in Philadelphia would allow their child to bring in powdered cocaine to a school. That is an outrage."
One second-grader confessed to her mother that she'd eaten some of the white powder. The child was rushed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and was found to be OK.
Southwest Detectives is trying to determine how the child got the drugs. Thompson says the child will not be able to return until she and her guardian have a meeting with the principal.
The second-grader will face punishment, which could range from suspension to expulsion. The school district will make that determination after the police have completed their investigation.
Letters have gone home to parents of every child at the Patterson School.

This is obviously Dave Chappell's fault. He shouldn't portray the character Tyrone as he does, it leads children to believe that drug use will be rewarded with winning the lottery and being invited to schools to give speeches. How dare you tell these lies to our children, Comedy Central, how dare you!?

Do 7 year olds even have a concept of what drugs are? Somehow I don't think the child is at fault here.

Me and my dad were hysterical over this last night. I mean, it's so absurd, you HAVE to laugh, otherwise, you'll succumb to the urge to stab your eyes out.
There was a bit more on the news. They were talking to the one little girl who was given the coke. The kid who brought it in had more than one lil bag, and was supposedly giving them out as 'samples'. When the lil girl on the news asked what it was, the other kid said, 'try it and find out'.
Sick enough, it sounds like this kid was purposely given this to pass out to kids in the class. Perhaps someone looking for future customers???
Shockingly, the kid who brought it in lives with their grandmother, and different people are reported to be coming and going from the house at all times.
And as a side note, some of these kids didn't know what it was so they TASTED IT. WTF?!?!

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't see how they can know that what they are doing is wrong, especially since they probably have no idea what drugs are.

Well, I guess if being removed from your home and put into foster care is not being punished, then yeah.

My seven year old is certainly aware of drugs to some extent. He often comes up with such humdingers as "I don't know why anyone would want to drink drugs" and "Why is that place allowed to sell cigarettes when they kill you?"

And "Daddy, I spilled your smelly flower vase again."

my drug policy when I'm teaching--whether it's middle school or college--is that the can bring in whatever they want provided they bring enough for everyone. In my classroom we practice a little value called sharing.

I find it hard to believe nobody is advocating a strict punishment for this kid. He put other lives in danger, right?
It's generally accepted that a child cannot have any degree of criminal culpability until they are at least 7 years old, and this kid is just 7, and didn't do anything malicious.
