Rolling Stone artist of the day

Guess who it is?

Just got my daily Rolling Stone email, which had a nice paragraph about Pearl Jam and at the bottom, listed PJ as their artist of the day...

Pretty exciting....this is what they said (nothing we don't really know yet, but I am not getting tired of reading it, although the Stone quote looks new...)

Is this really the first time Mike contributed lyrucs? Didn't he write Down? (I could have sworn I heard Ed say that to introduce the song on some bootleg from 2003)

Pearl Jam Set the Date

Veteran grunge rockers to release eighth studio effort in May Pearl Jam will release their eighth, self-titled studio album on May 2nd. Produced by Adam Kasper (Soundgarden), the follow-up to 2002's Riot Act was recorded in Seattle and will be the band's first for J Records.

"A couple of rock songs, a couple of ballads -- it's not rocket science," says Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard about the new disc. But his hopes are high: "It feels like a new opportunity for us. We're proud of the songs, and we think they have a chance to do a little better commercially."

Pearl Jam is the band's most collaborative effort yet: They produced the album together, each member will receive writing credits and for the first time ever guitarist Mike McCready contributes lyrics, to the album closer "Inside Job." Gossard has also contributed two of his own songs, "Parachutes" and "Life Wasted."

The first single, "World Wide Suicide," penned by frontman Eddie Vedder, hits radio March 8th. On the same day, the song -- which McCready has described as "very punky and Who-ish" -- will be made available as a free download on the band's Web site, pearljam.com.

Pearl Jam, who have sold more than sixty millions albums since their 1991 inception, will launch a spring world tour in support of the album. Details will be announced later this month.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Pearl Jam wears its emotions on its sleeve on its self-titled eighth album, which will be released May 2.

Material for the 13-track set took shape in the wake of President George W. Bush's re-election as well as the United States-led invasion of Iraq, the third anniversary of which is quickly approaching.

"It's understandable why someone would like their entertainment to provide an escape from modern day worries and the reality of war," Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder told Billboard.com. "We feel this record creates a healthy opportunity to process some of these emotions rather than deny them."

The J Records set marks the band's first studio set since 2002's "Riot Act," which took aim at Bush with the track "Bushleaguer," which Vedder wrote with guitarist Stone Gossard.

Two tracks have already been debuted live: "Comatose," which was previously known as "Crapshoot Rapture," is a fast, punkish rocker in the vein of 1994's "Spin the Black Circle," while Vedder's "Gone" was unveiled last fall during a show in Atlantic City, N.J. His solo demo of the song was recently included on Pearl Jam's annual holiday single for members of its Ten Club fan organization.

In a move that is unprecedented for a band of its stature, Pearl Jam is giving away a free MP3 of first single "World Wide Suicide" via its Web site (http://www.pearljam.com), simultaneous with its Tuesday release to U.S. rock radio outlets. Also expected in the next week is an announcement about Pearl Jam's 2006 touring plans.

Here is the track list for "Pearl Jam":

"Life Wasted"

"World Wide Suicide"

"Comatose"

"Severed Hand"

"Marker in the Sand"

"Parachutes"

"Unemployable"

"Big Wave"

"Gone"

"Wasted Reprise"

"Army Reserve"

"Come Back"

"Inside Job"

Pearl Jam Preps New Album, Tour

Mon Mar 06, 3:02 PM ET

Guess who's still alive?

After a nearly four-year break from recording, Pearl Jam has announced plans to release its eighth official studio album on May 2, followed by a major tour.

The self-titled disc contains 13 tracks, many of which, Eddie Vedder tells Billboard, were written by the grunge rock stalwarts out of anger and frustration at the reelection of President George W. Bush and the ongoing war in Iraq.

"It's understandable why someone would like their entertainment to provide an escape from modern-day worries and the reality of war," Vedder told the trade paper. "We feel this record creates a healthy opportunity to process some of these emotions rather than deny them." Visit for more:

Pearl Jam, of course, made headlines in 2002 with the anti-Bush screed "Bushleaguer." During concerts that year, Vedder impaled a Bush mask on a microphone stand, drawing some criticism from conservative quarters that the musicians went too far.

The new set, produced by Adam Kasper and Pearl Jam at Studio X in Seattle, is the group's first for J Records. The band left its longtime label, Epic, in 2003 after fulfilling the terms of its contract.

"It's a very special opportunity for us to work with a band that possesses such an historic legacy," J Records founder Clive Davis says in a statement.

To hype the release, Pearl Jam's making an MP3 of the lead single, "World Wide Suicide," available for free download for two days via the newly redesigned pearljam.com starting Wednesday, the same day the song goes out to radio stations across the country.

According to Vedder, the record has the usual barrage of "hard-driving" rockers the group is famous for along with two quieter cuts, "Parachutes" and "Come Back," which he said could represent the quintet's "best attempts yet at pulling the disguises off of loss of life, and even love." Two other tracks, "Comatose" and "Gone" have already been performed live.

An announcement regarding tour dates is expected within the coming days. While Pearl Jam hasn't issued any new material since 2002's Riot Act, which debuted on the Billboard charts at number five, Vedder & Co. have kept up appearances on the road, playing 37 dates in Europe and North America in 2005, including a benefit with Robert Plant at Chicago's House of Blues to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.
