good question
maybe he does it to preserve his voice now? that would be my guess. him not opening his mouth really only hurts certain songs..usually the rockers. but his scream is just as good!
bbut my argument against this is..now fans can hear EVERY show..not just the GREAT SHOWS...that circulate more.
there are sooooooo many shitty shows from 92-93 where eds voice is out of key, out of tune, and just terrible...oh and 95....
so yea...now we can hear every show and see some inconsitenciesaldsjfaje;jrwaesf
I´m almost certain that it´s a different singing method......he sings from the inside now (like a ventriloquist or something like that) and that´s better for his voice
I´ll ask some people I know who teach how to sign to see what I can find out

its just a stylistic thing... though most people that do this (which is basically known as freezing your jaw) as an unconscious thing...
it changes the sound of the voice, vowel sounds and like the way the consonants form etc... the only thing it really hurts is projection and depending on the person their very highest and lowest notes in the range.
thats my two cents!

he's probably using his diaphragm more (it's not what you thought it's the muscle in the chest that separates the lungs from the bowels), to sustain the air column on the way through his vocal chords, instead of just letting the air scratch the chords. with that, you don't need much articulation of jaw/mouth/lips.

There's the answer. It's a technique to preserve his voice over the duration of a tour.
