SEATTLE, September 8, 2005, Comprised of musicians who helped originate the “Seattle Sound,” that attracted millions of fans, inspired hundreds of artists and literally defined a decade, Novatone, will release its debut CD, Time Can’t Wait on the Seattle-based independent label Wax Orchard (distribution through Koch) on November 8.

The five-piece ensemble includes drummer Dave Krusen, and vocalist Ty Willman, former members of Pearl Jam and Green Apple Quickstep. As Novatone, with the added talents of guitarist Rob Lyons, keyboardist Rob Knop and bassist Cody Davis, the band delivers a musical brew steeped in the expansive melodies, authoritative guitar and propulsive rhythms of standard-bearers like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones and filtered through the group’s modern sensibility. That sensibility is rooted in the darkly assertive sonics, deep moods and raw emotion that provided the backdrop for their collective musical coming of age.

“Novatone is just at the beginning of a beautiful journey,” commented Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, an ardent fan who recommended Barrett Jones, whose credits include Nirvana, Foo Fighters and Bush, to produce Time Can’t Wait and provided the band with access to his own state-of-the-art Studio Litho. Novatone recorded the disc in just a week’s time including minimal overdubbing and mixing. This deliberately organic approach allowed the band to capture the energy, rawness and depth of its live show and strong musical compatibility without too much studio polish.

The sounds of Seattle in the ‘90s relied heavily on deep moods and refreshing sincerity, two important characteristics of the Novatone sound along with a true authenticity stemming from the band’s commitment to play what they feel, write the music they want to hear and not trying to sound like anyone or anything else currently out there.

The band’s combined influences and inspirations are broad, ranging from blues icon Robert Johnson to the classic sounds of Zeppelin and the Stones, the alt-rock musings of Lou Reed, Jane’s Addiction, and Mother Love Bone as well as U2 and the soulful funk of Herbie Hancock.

Novatone’s approach to songwriting, most of their material is written and arranged as a group, brings together these influences with the band’s deep grooves and memorable hooks delivered by Willman’s soaring and soulful voice.

Key tracks including the disc opener “Midnight,” are already being played on Seattle’s 90.3 KEXP and 104.9 KFNK, while the band performs at some of the city’s most influential venues including Neumos, The Crocodile, Chop Suey and Sunset Tavern. Novatone is embarking on a West Coast tour to support Time Can’t Wait this fall.

Yeah, I could hear some of the old "sound" in the music too. I kinda like the songs, from what I could hear.

Thanks, zeb.

He looks like someone's principal now. Just think--15 years ago he was in the studio working on Alive.
