Most people won't give a shit about this, but this is something that sort of affects me personally since I've been thinking of law school being a future possibility.
The 190-page budget bill also addresses recent talk by Marshall University officials of starting a law school there. In funding the law school at West Virginia University, the bill says it "shall continue to operate as the state's exclusive public college of law."
This is typical, WV legislation. They are always knocking anything down that they see as a possible "threat" to WVU. The amount of funding they get compared to Marshall is insane consider it is not much bigger of a school. The truth is they are more worried if something is good for WVU than the state.

i gues this is real common. how big schools always seem to get whatever they want from the state.
I look most other states and I see numerous universities that are flourishing while most of the WVU grads in our legislature sees Marshall's success as threatening. Oh well, Marshall might still eventually get a law school, but it will take much longer through private donations. This isn't really anything new since everything at Marshall has had to come from donations. I probably won't be around by then, though.
I find it hilarious WVU boasts they have a self sustaining athletic dept. though their facilities are paid for by the state tax payers. One example is their indoor practice facility named after a former governor who funded it. Marshall has been trying to get an IPF, but the state has turned down funding. Also the medical school at WVU is funded by a state pop tax while Marshall's medical school is left without anything (our governor tried to have it shut down when he was in the senate).
My point is I laugh when people say that I should root for WVU in sports. There's much more to how I feel about them. Obviously that's politics for you, but it doesn't neccessarily make it right. Two universities with state support would be much better for the state than just one IMO.

Yeah, everyone's a little miffed that you keep on defending West Virginia. Especially with those cheerleader pictures. We need to have at least one state that we can label as a bunch of toothless hicks, and you have destroyed that for us. We just can't handle a West Virginia that isn't a bunch of incestuous miscreants. You have turned our world upside down.

Im not kidding when I say that, for the money, Florida's State University System owns all. FSU, UF, USF, & UCF are great schools and they are a bargain when compared to the rest of the country. I think its because the legislature splits money pretty evenly, allowing the schools to allocate funds as they see fit.
GO KNIGHTS!

as a born and bred yankee, i can honestly say that west virginia is not nearly as "hickish" as everyone seems to think. i spent almost a week in morgantown the summer before my senior year of high school and it was damn pleasant there (and it's pretty close to pittsburgh too). the people were nice, the scenery was very different than minnesota, and the food was good.
on topic, that is bullshit, man. i don't know what else to say. it is pretty shady that things like this happen and nobody seems to care. choice/competition is good, i thought that was a golden rule of "free market" economics.

well, the real morons are the ones who wear those "It's all relative in West Virginia" t-shirts and those who actually believe the state is as bad as it is. Having grown up there and lived in several different states in the past few years I can definately say that there are worse states out there. Louisiana and Alabama come to mind, for example.

What a wonderful rebuttle. Attitudes like that are probably why it continues to happen. It also seems like there were plenty of people who don't give a damn about politics which is probably why we are left with the president we currently have.

I know, I'm not that mad at her, but I still stated the truth. Why don't she at least try to make up some excuse?
