sadly, this took me about 5 minutes to sketch out, another 2 or 3 minutes to trace with ink pen, and then 15 minutes to use photoshop to color.

the problem is, im never happy with anything i draw. i want it to be perfect on the first attempt and if its not, i crumble it up and start again.

anyone else have this problem?

he just needs pants, a face, and a background. i don't see anything wrong with him really.

i know where you're coming from - i do the same thing with photographs - but, i've always been a fan of finishing them (sizing, adjusting levels, whatever) before scrapping them.

i'd at least like to see what it'd look like finished since i can't draw anything remotely in the realm of that.

i had and have that same problem.

with drawing, writing, painting, photoediting, film editing....pretty much everything that requires creativity.

im just never satisfied with my own work.

but i guess thats the beauty of it...you just keep going and going and going...trying to perfect yourself...trying different techniques and developing new ideas.

dont let it frustrate you...its just all part of being an artist.

eventually youll create something that youre (almost) satisfied with...

ive never really been fully satisfied with anything ive created...maybe certain moments i have...but i eventually start nitpicking my work again and again.

i guess all im saying is just...keep drawing.

all great artists have stacks and stacks of unfinished sketches....

...AND ALL GREAT MASTERPIECES STARTED OUT AS AN UNFINISHED SKETCH...IT JUST KEPT GETTING DEVELOPED...OVER AND OVER AND OVER...AND YOU WONDER...DOES IT EVER REALLY BECOME FINISHED?

wow, i always thought this was my own personal deficiency, so i'm glad other people have this problem. only i wouldn't have even made it to that stage before completely giving up and determining that i suck at art. i think it's one part laziness, the other part lack of perserverence. and alas, i've resorted to a soc major instead;)

as for the transient satisfication with finished work: one of my art teachers told me that reflecting back and being disatisfied with your previous artwork is one of the best possible signs, as it shows you've made improvement since then. i thought that was v. perceptive...

so at another board i use to catch up on my favorite book medium they have a little deal where you pick a number and are assigned a random character to draw, then at the end, they take the time to put all the characters into one picture

though not the best cause i did this on my lunch break in about 15 minutes

ImageImage

i have started the process of coloring it and shading (though no shading as of yet)

im really hoping i can figure out how to touch up the face, cause its fairly generic imo

How did you color the hair and fur on the collar like that? Photoshop?

yup,

they have a special brush that is used for grass. all you have to do is select the colors and adjust the size of the brush.

i have a few photoshop books that i should read so i can figure out how to do things but i try to teach myself on the fly

Nice! I'd add a little shadow on the face or something to define it.

But yeah, I've thought about getting Photoshop. It would definitely make my life easier. But it might be too much.

good structure. maybe the abs and quads could be better defined. the muscles of the left upper arm need to be redrawn to look like they are on the same plane as the forearm. currently they look perpendicular. more shading will really give him life. congrats on finishing.

You should lobby for some of the NEA funds Obama is handing out. This is probably up the right alley.
