This man is possibly the greatest filmmaker of all time in my book.

The more of his movies I see, the more brilliance I discover. I just saw "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb" FINALLY and JESUS CHRIST is was fucking amazing.

I look forward to seeing all of his films, but my rankings so far:
1. A Clockwork Orange
2. The Shining

5. Full Metal Jacket

The next ones I'm gonna watch are "Barry Lyndon" and "Killer's Kiss," and I greatly anticipate seeing "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Paths of Glory."

I really wish he had been alive to finish A.I. Had he been, it quite possibly could have been another masterpiece.

Why the fuck did they disrespect Kubrick by still going ahead with A.I. after his death? It's a damn shame.

I'm watching Full Metal Jacket again, and I have to say that the soap scene is probably one of the most distressing/disturbing film scenes I've ever viewed.

Kubrick's my favorite director. I only one of his films that I really don't like is Killer's Kiss. I've only seen it once, though.

As far as the A.I. thing goes, Kubrick specifically asked Spielberg to direct it, so I don't think it was disrepectful in any way that they made the film after Kubrick's death.

I don't know why Eyes Wide Shut gets so much flack. I think it's pretty eerie and a solid movie

2001 is one of the top five films ever made, IMO. I don't think anything else Kubrick did even comes close to it, even though most of his stuff is pretty great.

A.I. is just too confused, and doesn't know if it wants to be dark and eerie or light and whimsical, so it just comes out as the worst of both worlds in a way. I was still able to enjoy it though.


Eyes Wide Shut is one of the best achievements in atmosphere that I have ever seen in a film. The whole feels so weighty and dark.

I'll have to agree with Auggie that 2001 is his best work, and probably the best film adapted from a book ever.

Better than A Clockwork Orange?

In my opinion.. A Clockwork Orange is fantastic, but 2001 is such an epic event, and so well done, especially considering the justice that it does the novel. It's a case of "this is great, but this is even better".

Hmm, I agree about the "this is great, but this is even better" thing, but I would say 2001 is the great, ACO the even better. My mouth was hanging open for pretty the entire duration of ACO, and it just blew my fucking mind. 2001 certainly had it's brilliant moments ("The Dawn of Man") but overall it just didn't add up to the brilliance of ACO.

I'll take ACO and The shining over 2001. I know 2001 isn't your typical sci-fi movie but it still basically is and i never can get into sci-fi

The Shining is also a masterpiece. Nowhere near the level of ACO, but it is probably the best film about insanity that I've ever seen.

Kubrick is amazing

Anyway, I saw Dr. Strangelove a few weeks ago and what an absolutely amazing film. Ironically I saw Rashomon the next week, and very very rarely do films live to be as good as I want them to, for myself. I was lucky enough to get 2 within a 2 week period, because Dr. Strangelove was one of those films. Clockwork Orange was pretty good too, for the most part. 2001 was probably one of the first films that I ever saw, because its my dad's favorite.

The Shining is good, but I feel as though the book was massacred. Kubrick put some of himself into the movie (as all good directors should), but anybody who read Stephen King's book was a little disappointed. If you haven't, its still an awesome movie, just doesn't quite live up to the book though.

I don't think that it was disrespecting him... the whole time kubrick and spielberg were developing it kubric was saying spielberg should direct it, and vice versa... i mean the fact that they were both insisting on the other to do it, i'm sure kubric was happy that spielberg did it

Yeah, but Spielberg should've backed out after he died, after all, he could no longer consult him about the film, thus, it ended up sucking.
