Mitch Hurwitz Quits Arrested Development
Variety reports that Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz says he will not be continuing with the series, throwing a major wrench into attempts to keep the Emmy-winning comedy alive for a fourth season.

Series producers 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine Television had agreed on a deal to move "Arrested," previously on Fox, to Showtime -- assuming Hurwitz was willing to come back. In the end, however, a mix of creative and financial concerns has prompted Hurwitz to move on.

Hurwitz said he had briefed most of the show's cast about his decision, as well as some of the writers. He also talked with executive producer-narrator Ron Howard, who asked Hurwitz if he would be willing to continue as a consultant on "Arrested" should 20th and Imagine find a network willing to continue the series without Hurwitz.

"I said I'd be happy to do that, but that as showrunner, I've gone as far as I can go," he said.

Hurwitz hinted that while "Arrested" may have run its course as a TV show as far as he's concerned, he would be interested in reviving the franchise as a feature film.

this is a huge bummer. i was hoping theyd make the jump to showtime, but without mitch hurwitz on full-time, i dont think the show would be anywhere near as good as it was. we do have 3 great seasons to look back on, but this is still a let down :(

I don't know...people said the same way back when Larry David left Seinfeld. I think w/a proper writing staff, the show could go on and succeed. Hurwitz was great, but not the end all be all.

In two weeks he's gonna realize he made a huge mistake.

Plus, if anybody can keep the show running and find good people, it's Ron Howard.

Uh, Seinfeld wasn't anywhere near as good when David left. The last two seasons sucked in comparison to everything that came before.

And btw, it's done. Even if they get other writers, it won't be in the same league

I wouldn't say they "sucked", but I agree; the show was better w/David. Point is, the show did go on, and and did succeed in the ratings. Seinfeld didn't even get really good until the 4th season. I could see Arrested being great with a little more time.

That blows, I was considering getting Showtime just for this. Oh well, I guess I'll save some money then. Wasn't there rumors of a movie?

this is sort of off topic, but one of my friends had a grease fire in his apartmnet the other day, and when the fire marshall came in, he saw that "OH MY GOD , WE'RE HAVING A FIRE....sale" was written on a whiteboard and accused my friends of arson  i got a good chuckle out of that.

Season 9 has episodes that are as good as, or better than anything from the middle years....

Dealership, The Voice and The Burning are all amongst the best episodes in the history of television.
