What does everyone think of Kasper? I don't want to get into everyone throwing around technical jargon and talking about their studio experience, but I've always been obsessed with different producers impacts on a band's sound.
First, Adam Kasper has been involved in alot of classic albums- but not necessarily producing... mostly Seattle bands... Sunny Day Real Estate's "How it Feels....", Down on the Upside, Vitalogy (didn't he engineer some?)...
But I'm really just not into his new stuff, as much as I hate to say it. I thought he and Pearl Jam would be an awesome match (during Riot Act) because Soundgarden's DotU sounds fucking incredible. BUT, his recent output sounds kind of LIFELESS to me! He obviously gets really rocking, big drum sounds and pushed it all up front, but his recordings really lack character to me...
Obviously just my opinion, but when you listen to the Brendan Obrien records, think about how each album really had a certain vibe about them, how he was able to tap into the bands sound and bring out little nuances that aren't there in Riot Act. Kasper obviously gets everything sounding good, but it's almost just kind of boring...
For the record, although the songs from the forthcoming album are going to be better than Riot Act, I think the production as a whole is sounding EXACTLY like Riot Act-- judging from WWS and Unemployable, probably like them better than anything on Riot Act, but they sound like they could have come from the same sessions...
Sorry to ramble...just curious what you guys think
---ps-- I'm a fan of Binaural...Tchad Blake was kind of ill-suited for a big rock band like pearl jam, but you have to admit the album sounds pretty interesting...

I'm kind of indifferent to producers. It's obvious that Kasper is doing something the band likes, otherwise they would have gone with someone different for Pearl Jam.

The work he does is not spectacular but is certainly solid.
I get the impression that, unlike a number of high profile producers, his main intention is to record the band as "live" as possible. I think in the case of PJ that's probably the smartest way to go.

I didn't know Kasper did down on the upside. I like the production on that record.
Kasper's stuff feels a little thin and flat at time. Almost cold, in a way that OBrien never did. But to be fair, Riot Act was a lackluster performance from the band as well. I want to wait to hear the new record before I really dismiss him as a disaster

Even tho Adam Kasper is the producer, I think the band has matured into such a force they do most of the production themselves. I am guessing the bands ideas are come first and foremost.
When you are a young band you continuely lean on your producer. It just so happens Brendan O'Brien produced their big, hug early records.
But don't think for a second if Brendan O'Brien was producing the current records they would sound much different. 50 million albums sold basically gives a band free will on their records. Adam Kasper is just there to lend suggestions.

while you don't want to lean too heavily on a producer you also need someone willing to come in and say
Ed look, you just have to try harder on you are
or
Ed look, I never knew soap makes you taller is a terrible lyric
or
Matt, drop the pen. Get right makes no sense

I'm not going to judge this one till I hear it all--finished. I will say though that I love Brendan O"Brien and I would follow him around and buy everything he's involved with.
Some of the best threads in my personal opinion comes from stupid mops. I posted a thread a while ago that was dodged and ignored that Adam Kasper is the true" bushleaguer" and Pearl Jam indeed should have took notice to what Bob Rock did to Metallica's" St. Anger" is to what Adam Kasper did to "Riot Act". However Metallica listen to it's fans and ditched his fuckin ass and got Rick Rubin.
I was so fucking amped when I heard all of the media reoprts in the last couple years that Pearl Jam was rocking again. Then I said to myself horseshit!, when I heard Adam Kasper is going to be behind the boards!
Pearl Jam may have tasted a record wasted and should never work with Adam Kasper. How did fucking "Down on the Upside" kick so much ass?

Beacuse DOTU had better songs and was performed by better musicians.
j.
DOTU is great but it that came out like 10 years ago. Technology and this band's sound and style have changed markedly. Granted that RA was pretty shit, I think as Stip said, we need to wait and see what the actual cd sounds like rather than basing opinion from some shitty mp3.

First of all "Soap makes you taller" is a JEFF lyric (and yes, Jeff sucks at songwriting)
2nd, I actually love Get Right, consider it a strong point of the album....
But, as far as production, Riot Act is AMAZING. What the HELL are you guys talking about???? FULL guitars, live-sounding, if there is one thing they did right on the album, it's production. I think some of you are clouding your dislike of the band's performance or songwriting, or the fact that they decided to record the thing is like a month and mistaking it for bad production. The band chose to make it very rough and raw (however, it came out sounding as "unfinished" and "incomplete"). THAT wasn't Adam's fault, that's the band. Adam's a killer producer, listen to all his other stuff from that same time period. Any screw up is the band's.
